How do you guys deal with or what are some strategies for fighting against an opponent who is taller with a longer reach than you and has a big punch. Kinda like if you were to go up against somebody from a higher weight class.

Also what are some good fights that show this as an example like
    Mayweather vs Corrales
    Hearns vs anybody

Head movement and aggressiveness are key, keep a tight guard slip and move forward you must get inside and stay inside where your been shorter is an advantage. Watch any videos of Tyson when he was young.

Step in and pivot with a high guard, and counter.

Mayweather had a longer reach than Corrales. Mayweather Hoya might be better example although I think their reach was pretty much the same. Pac-Margo is another, Margo had huge reach and height advantage and tried to use the jab. Whitaker/Mosley-Hoya is another I suppose.

I would pressure him paying close attention to my defense. Usually a bigger guy pays a higher price for staying active. So keep him punching to gas him and shred him between combos.

If he is bigger, fitter, longer AND of greater skill than you? Man he shouldn't be banging with you at anywhere near 100%. It is great work, but you can't beat yourself up about it if you don't get the best of him.

if reach is a huge advantage for him than stay inside like they've said here, you want to tie him from making distance into getting more power out of his punches, work the body too. guys big and tall for there weight class seem to be vulnerable to big body work, you'll have him looking like a drunk giraffe if u work the body hard enough and have fair power.

eventhough pac/marg are good example , look into mosley/marg, look at how mosley would get inside throwing looping left and right hooks but keeping his face as close as possible to marg. At times you'd see him put his face next to marg what you might have not seen was this neutralized margs wide powerful hooks, and most effectively the uppercut. Because if you go inside he will catch you with it but when you walking into him putting your face next to his and pounding with quick looping hooks to the side of his head this makes it difficult for marg to get that uppercut in there, because 1: he cant get the uppercut properly in there 2: for him to land it he would have to step back and throw it bending his weist to the side to angle it to land (it wont be straight from up from the waist 3: otherway to land it is thowing it in a curvy way which takes steam off it and its effect 4: with all the preassures and blows being connected it may not cross his mind throwing the uppercut or finding how to throw it other than thinking how to get you out from the inside, and if he's trying to get hooks and straight in there... its not going to happen, what will keep happening is relentless preassure:good

If he's a lot taller than you (4in and more), a good boxer with a good jab and power, than you pretty much have to suck it up and take it to him like Joe Frazier did. Workrate is king here. Most tall fighters are trained to be boxers, so if you can make it a brawl your chances go up.
But in the end, the saying is "a good tall fighter beats a good small fighter".

There is no easy way. Look at SRL-Hearns. Leonard circled and looked for openings for 5 rounds or so. Eventually, he just walked Hearns down and took the punches he had to take to land his own.

Pac is Pac. He could do what he wanted to Margarito because he's 3 leagues above him. Never take boxing cues from athletic freaks like Pac or Jones.

You are the same guy who made that other horrible post about sparring in 8 oz gloves with your kickboxing cousin. WTF?

Pac/Marg and Mosley/Marg are HORRIBLE examples because Marg is about one of the WORST tall fighters in the game. He gives up his height so it isn't an issue. So using him as a blueprint on beating a "tall" fighter is pointless.

Seriously man this advice... Where the hell is Virus when you need him!

    Ali - Frazier
    Tyson - Anybody

The key is to know how the guy (your opponent) fights. Just because a guy is tall doesn't mean he fights tall. You could do all of this "research" and the guy fights tricky like James Toney.

So you really have to do your research understanding that height differences are only the beginning. You need to be looking to study guys who are tall AND fight tall (strong jab, decent straight, stuff inside fighting). Then formulate your game plan off of fights/guys who gave them fits.

The Klit brothers are great examples. Larry Holmes is another great example. Try to see what/who gave them the most problems. Dawson/Pascal is another great fight to watch. Clottey and Wright may provide an alternative strategy that could work against any style.

Margo and Williams are horrible examples as they constantly give up their height.

I've always had more luck making a taller opponent punch around me by staying in close, at range its a good way to get knocked out. Work the body as hard as you can but watch out for sharp uppercuts. If they are much taller they have to punch down and around you to reach your body, but if its just an inch or two the inside game could be a mistake.

Its a really tough spot to be in with no sure fire solution. I thought Joan Guzman was doing okay against Funeka in their first fight with a smart strategy but he started to fall apart and definitely definitely lost - I couldn't have told him to do anything differently, honestly, sometimes it just doesn't work.

    Hehe.

I mentioned Leonard-Hearns, because Leonard was a truly gifted man, one of the best boxers of all time. He tried to box Hearns for the first few rounds but didn't achieve anything. Eventually, even one of the best boxers of all time had to concede the height/reach advantage (which wasn't even that big, 2in or so) and make it a brawl.

I'm not saying anyone should try to emulate Leonard at all. I was just referring to people suggesting to emulate Pac vs. Margarito. Pac is so quick and so unorthodox and Margarito is such a good match stylewise for him, this is a horrible blue-print.

Another bad example is Gamboa. The guy is smaller than most of his opponents, yet he fights from outside. It works, because he's a freak, he's unbelievably quick and he was drilled from young age in Cuba.

I am a tall fighter 6.6ft and I can say my largest weak point is body ... If you slip inside and hammer at the gut youl have him but watch your self while backing out I love landing a good hook on a guy as he is backing out lol :)

Whatever you do, don't stand right in front of him like Perez did the other night with Broner. If you are a mobile fighter you'll want to move, in and out, circle both directions, feinting to draw leads that you can counter off of. If not so mobile, try and be even shorter, to make him punch down at you so you can punch back over the top.
I think a key thing in either case is surrounding his jab; that is, getting outside his lead arm and foot. Good angles to punch, he can't tie you up, and you can turn him into punches.
