Why are the lower weight classes getting so tall?

Tyson is not a good example, HW is unlimited, guy's don't have to struggle to make weight, which is why we see so many fat asses.
To me if they weigh in the day before or the day of it makes for the same advantage to both so it really doesn't matter when they weigh in. Some guys like Paul Williams and Bob Foster are just freakishly tall and thin, same with Pavlik, this is nothing new in boxing at all.

Yeah that's all true. If they were to make the weigh-in a week before the fight, then 99.9% of boxers would be dehydrating to get 2-3 weight classes below their fight night weight.

I always thought that dehydrating to make weight and then rehydrating by anything more than 5lbs would make you come in at 80% or less for the fight as opposed to naturally making the weigh.

Tyson didn't fight dehydrators. The heavyweight division is an open division and your opponent can weigh whatever he wants, but I get your drift and agree with what you are saying.

As much as I admired Duran, he would sometimes blow up to 180+ between fights when a welterweight. Same with Hatton, hence the nickname "Fatton".

Look at the last fight Pacquaio had, Margarito entered the ring between 155-160 that night if I remember right, and still looked pretty drained.

they also eat too much fastfood nowadays. In japan, average height improved by about 5 inches in a span of three decades, and Mcdonalds etc had alot to do with it

One of the sanctioning bodies has a 30 day weigh in where you can't be more than 10 percent over fight weight.I think it's the IBF but I could be mistaken. They also do one the day before or day of, one of the two, to make sure you're not too over weight.

Modern day understanding of nutrition helps a lot.

Willie Pep was 6'1 and fought as low as 125.

All the welterweights in the 80s were like 5'9'' to 6' tall, I feel they are shorter and stockier now in general.

Same day weigh ins for sure, and people just have different builds. The short stocky "mexican" low weight class fighter (5'5'' 126 lbs) is still very very common, they are starting their careers young and getting fuller and fatter later. I was 5'8'' fighting at 118 in college easy, just bone structure. Walking around for years at 128 pounds with a fair amount of muscle, too.

Same day weigh ins really do make a difference. Look at the work rate and size of the guys Hagler was fighting. As busy as today's welterweights, but there are always going to be exceptions.

so true....in high school i was 5'5" wrestling at 140 and 135 and now im 25 and 5'7" but im 160, When i do try to get in shape or cut weight i can still make 140 so it has to do with same day weigh in, bone structure, our knowledge of nutrition etc. great post

Haha, don't go down to 140 though. Your hand speed is bound to be suspect. :nono
