i know he was only a kid when his career ended, but i feel he was really overated.
he would really have to improve a lot to thrive in that age. ayala looks fat at junior middle.

imn 50-50 on whether he would win a title in the 80's considering the talent that was around his weight class(s) (curry, hearns, mccallum, jackson, starling, graham etc etc)

the only one of the fab four i give him a chance with is a jaded and over weight duran

tony reminds me of a mexican miguel cotto

I dont think he was as good as Cotto. He might have won a title depends on the opponent he fought, but a lot of times these one dimensional powerhouses look spectacular coming up the ranks knocking out bums, but then they face a technician that takes them apart. Diego Corrales would be a good example.

Against Hearns or McCallum, maybe. Tony would've made quick work of Duran, Moore and Benitez though.

They say he was a ATG prodigy cos he beat up by Pipinino Cuevas in sparring at 15. an achievement like considering his age but top pro boxers are known to fight well below par in sparring.

ali used to get ****ed by guys 3 or four league below him in sparring

Score!!!!...I think Ayala would've KO Moore. Hard to say anymore than that...Very talented, problably would have peaked very early. looked good in that film against Lamont Kirkland as an amatuer.

Fortunate for boxing that the sick twisted piece of **** was imprisoned before he became a champion and a big star.

Not sure if he had the ability to win a title anyway. Benitez and even Davey Moore were a step up from who he had been fighting, let's face it.

I think he'd have probably outgunned Moore.

He didnt ever show the skill to beat any of the others. Had the potential, but the skills just werent there yet.

Yes.... With Moore, Duran and Hearns being champs at 154 in 1982 and 1983, Tony Ayala had a steep hill to climb........ Ayala by 1982 had a 20 fight pro record over bums, stiffs and has-beens.... Who did he ever beat? Screw all his mythical bull**** about his gym wars, etc..... That ain't enough public exposure or solid proof.... All speculation.....

Pretty much. Its easy to see the aggression and the fire behind his fighting, and I think less of Moore than most.

But on the whole, Tony didnt ever show anything on in the ring while under the lights that showed he could beat a Duran or a Hearns.

great point. theres plenty of guys who were great in the gym but somehow come short in ring

dont get me wrong he had plenty of time to improve, but he never showed the ability to beat the superstar greats that were around at the time

I think he was at the level (or could have been) of guys like Davey Moore and Matthew Hilton. The IBF was just ramping up in the mid 80's and guys like Mark Medal and Earl Hargrove were contesting titles, so I certainly think he could've grabbed a belt.
Duran would have brutally schooled him, and he had no shot against Hagler/Leonard/Hearns. A guy like McCallum would have surgically dismantled him.
