The evolution of Victor Ortiz

I want to see him fight Maidana next and then we will know for sure

 

Its funny because he really did look like he had lost the ability to pull the trigger in some of his last few outings. I think he started getting hit hard by Maidana and really didnt expect it or at least not to that level and he lost heart for the battle.

In his next few fights he has looked good like he has the potential but just lost the mental ability.

Maybe it was the idea of last chance saloon or that he was getting a world title shot either way it has to be admired the attitude he took into this fight when most saw him as a bottlejob

I think the moment that illustrates it best for me is the 6th where he has been dropped he is hurt he is fighting on instinct Maidana stopped him then and you see a real grit in his face of pain gritting his teeth as he was digging deep and he pulled out that shot to drop Berto at the end of the round.

 

I predicted him to beat Berto, and was impressed by his performance.

But I still think the top boys at 140 take him, Maidana included.

 

I saw little to no difference stylistically.

He seemed much more capable mentally; whether or not he'll unravel against someone better than Berto is another question entirely.

Great fight, great performance.

 

He had his moment to prove he was no quitter. The same way Duran did. They both had a night they deeply regret and when you put on a performance like that, boxing fans can find forgiveness.

 

He was just very revved up, simple as that. But a guy who has been flat before can always revert to type.

Maybe he's learnt to embrace the role of challenger, developed a siege mentality, who knows. Time will tell if it was a one off or not.

He's still pretty much the same fighter he was before moving up, except more comfortable and, more importantly, much more determined. We saw his strenghts and weaknesses, he's got an excellent right uppercut on the inside, hits like a mule in both hands and has great technique. Counteracted by the fact that he's far too static, is way too open when throwing and doesn't use his jab enough. If he threw a jab even to disguise the assault that follows it would highly benefit him.

Basically, he just improved his mentality for the fight, that's all really. The key is whether or not this is a permanent change, or if he only did it for this fight and he'll end up reverting back. Time will tell.

EDIT: And Berto ain't no quality operator.

 

I agree.

He's fought two top 10 guys.... lost one and arguably lost the other.

Quintana had only ever really beaten Williams and had already been stopped by Williams himself and Cotto.

Forbes is a tough guy but average as hell above 135. The rest

 

Dodgy chin, sporadically impressive offensively, little in the way of movement....early on he is fragile as ****.
