McCloskey’s EBU title goes vacant for Lauri and Shafikov in May

Former WBA light-welterweight title challenger Paul "Dudey" McCloskey faces another disappointment after his six-round loss to Amir Khan and the failure to secure a rematch, as the EBU have vacated his European 140lb title for the next two fighters in line to square off for in May.

Italian former belt holder Giuseppe Lauri (51-7, 31 KO’s), whom McCloskey beat to claim the title from in June 2010 will face undefeated Russian Denis Shafikov (26-0-1, 15 KO’s) on May 20th or May 21st in Varese, Italy to contest the vacant strap, handing the Irishman another body blow.

The 31 year-old will have the chance to regain the title though as he will instantly be named as mandatory challenger to the champion and could decide to have a warm-up fight in June or July, before taking on the winner in the late Autumn in a bid to regain his crown.

McCloskey didnt win the WBA, His EBU was vacated and it looks like he is going to have to fight for the commonwealth title now if he can get the fight made.

McCLoskey needs to get a quick win under his belt. If he fights soon it will make a statement about the cut not being bad. June on the Kell Brook undercard and the 1st live fight on sky is perfect.

Then he will be mando for the winner of this fight. Matchroom win PB's and bang it on in Ireland with Frampton on the undercard. Bish Bash Bosh by the end of 2012 Khan/Bradley/Judah/Marquez will have unified, moved up and 4 belts will be vacant and Paul coming off 4 European title fights will be in a position to get at least an eliminator.

Yep its pretty simple. McCloskey sells enough tickets to justify a 10 rounder agaisnt moderate European oppo on the Brook undercard. McCloskey is already ranked No.1 with the EBU he just needs a win to allow him to be mandatory. Lenny Daws, Jason Cook would be avalible.

When I win that euro lottery I plan to buy the WBC, WBA, IBF & WBO. Thats when tings get intresting.

TBH it is a good plan wish it would come off but sadly we have to be sceptical in boxing.

You would not be able to buy all the organisations and ill tell you why. You might be able to snap up one or two but people like Sulaiman have a plan they genuinely think they are contributing to boxing but it is in that culture that they try and take bribes and skim some off for themselves and their mates (allegedly). Their aim is not to make as much money as they can Sulaiman doesnt want 10million for the WBC he wants to be able to run it but experience as many perks as he can whilst doing it.

Hearn reads the forum. He knows it makes sense.

Sillyman might run the WBC but he doesn't own the WBC. You could snap them up for 10mil each.

Rob is the ultimate boxing idealist. I actually admire it, but the way he says everything as fact when 99% of it is simply his opinion is hilarious.

I reckon if Khan wins & is elevated to Super Champion, McCloskey could get to fight for the vacant WBA title given the furore & the tickets he can shift.

If Khan loses I see the title being vacated within 6 months anyway & Maidana fighting for it (likely against Khan) but if not possible McCloskey. A world title shot within 12 months is very possible for Dudey.

McCloskey really got the **** end of the stick. Imagine if this had happened to Khan when he was fighting for a world title, we'd never hear the ****ing end of it.

Lauri fighting for another European title, just what I wanted to see. I wonder if Shafikov will make as much of a meal out of it as McCloskey.
