I think Berto was shocked at how willing Ortiz was to engage and make it a brawl. And who could blame him after watching his last 3 fights? I do think Victor gained some measure of redemption here though, unlike you. But I don't think he'll be rematching Maidana anytime soon though.

This is one of the best fights of the year right up there with maidana/Kahn and Marquez/katsidis

He pushed the fight much more than Berto and when the going got tough he hung in there; how could you not see that? If Ortiz gets better with fundamentals and fought with the passion he did against Berto then he will gain a big fanbase.

I tried to tell some nuthugger this the other day. A one fight result does not change anything it takes more than that. Just like the Khan fanboys that think he has a Chin now because he survived Maidana. Takes more than that Tommy Morrison survived George Foreman it doesn't mean he didn't have a Glass Jaw.

Ortiz was in there with a guy that had a Chin just as bad if not worse than his. It didn't erase or prove anything.

Pretty harsh... Ortiz did get nailed with some nasty shots, and still kept coming.

But, you make a good point... Berto sucked that night. The win is a little over-rated imo.

Ortiz's jaw isnt glass. It was his heart that was glass and he moved in the right direction with the win.

Moved in the right direction? I agree with that. :good He has a Glass Jaw. It also takes more than a one fight result to prove something.

Khan not only survived Maidana but took big shots in the process. He is not granite chinned but his punch resistance is ok at JWW. Deal with it.

Neither is Maidana, or ever will be.

that goes both ways. If you say it takes more than one fight, then you can't judge him based on one fight either - Maidana.

So it either takes more than one fight or it does not.

Since people keeps referring back to the Maidana fight, then one fight should suffice,.

I have always said that Ortiz was a young fighter that needed experience, including getting his ass whooped in order to grow.

Maidana fight was just a step in a long line of of other steps, that includes the Berto fight.

Yes he still quit versus Maidana, but I think he is getting mentally stronger every fight.

He may never be a Hagler or JMM or Ali, ATG Heart, but he is getting better.

Not every opponent has a pressure fighting style like Maidana. In defeating Berto, Ortiz proved that he could handle himself against a fast handed and explosive undefeated welter weight.

Granted, defeating Berto doesn't translate into the assumption that Ortiz could have similar success against an opponent who will keep him under constant pressure. For instance, I would have immense doubts about his chances against an opponent such a Margarito.

Still, his performance last weekend was impressive enough to create a newly found intrigue and a desire to see him up against other top welters.
