Witherspoon most definitely did not "nearly almost beat Prime Larry Homer"... He won 5 rounds at best, and that's being biased for Witherspoon. He hurt Holmes mid-rounds and failed to capitalize... He walked around doing nothing all night. Tyson whips his ass. Tyson mid-late stoppage or KO.
Pretty much how I see it. Witherspoon was always pretty durable, the second 'Bonecrusher' Smith fight notwithstanding, and would smother a lot of Tyson's attacks early on with his competent defensive skills. He would n't be able to hurt Tyson much, though.
If Tim had a bit more poke in his punches,I'd agree. Tyson needs to be hurt in order to be discouraged, then frustrated then OUT ! As he was against Buster 'one trick pony' Douglas.
Douglas Ko% = 54% Timmy W Ko% = 55% Spoon CAN hurt Tyson And WOULD hurt Tyson. :deal I AGREE 100% if Tyson Hurt he ALWAYS Discouraged, Frustrated And KO'd! This happened in ALL his loses. People stood up to teh BULLY, punched him back, HURT him, he got frustrated cos he a spineless BULLY And then he got BULLIED himself AND KTFO. :deal Foreman Hoooooooooooook!! :rasta:hat:smoke
On that night,in the Land of the Rising Sun,he did.....yeah. I'm sure Tyson will agree that Douglas had quite a bit of poke on his mitts.
Tyson by KO, pretty much how he handled all of the fighters from the late 80's...Witherspoon would fold
Agreed. Team Tyson sure did clean up on all those early 80's heavies and unified the division in not much time. By 86, I don't see what a declining skills version of Witherspoon is going to do & would just be another victim. Perhaps an 82 or 83 version of Tim hangs in there a little longer but winning? Nope. Once Tim upped the ante and fought top 10 guys it was decisions and long fights. Facing a 21 year old dynamo like Tyson is a quantum leap in competition and I don't see the Witherspoon reflexes ad******g to the kind of attack he'd face the second the bell rang.
A better question is why didn't Tyson fight Witherpoon? I do believe Witherspoon would train hard and be up for the match to stick it to Don King. Tyson started to slip around the Bruno fight. Witherpsoon, who had a good chin, some size, good skills, and a hard right hand could have upset Tyson in the late 1980's up to Douglas had the match been made. Pre 1988, I'd go with Tyson.
I always thought witherpoon deserved a shot at Tyson more than Tubbs, biggs and bruno. He was Mikes number one contender but then Tyson knocked carl williams out in one round then witherspoon beat carl on a SD. There were a lot of fighters in the 1980s all at the same level. Good fighters but simply unable to beat other rated fighters. witherspoon, page, berbick, tubbs, smith, weaver, truth williams put them all together and you couldnt bet on anyone. only Holmes and Tyson were good enough to beat rated fighters with any kind of consistancy. Yes for one night tim spoon troubled the homer but he was contained that night and did not really push for a win in the way holmes did against Norton. spoon show cased what kind of fighter he could be that night, it was his "tokyo douglas" performance only he didnt win.
LOL at Witherspoon ko'ing Mike in the late 80s. He was good enough to upset Mike but was very inconsistent. I predict Mike by lae stoppage or UD win. Foreman Hook, as far as Mike folding, take your damn "I hate Mike because my dad bet money on him to lose yet that's MY DAD"S fault" glasses on and see the Ruddock, Bruno, and Tucker fights. Tyson overcame adversity to beat them. Even in Holyfield 1 he started off good early and won the 5th round and had another onslaught at round 10 but Holyfield was just the better fighter that night. The only people that question Tyson's heart are haters and/or those that don't study his fights. At Tyson's best night or best years he would beat the inconsistent but talented Witherspoon.
