Hearns as great as he was just could'nt nail Barkley's number in both fights. The result at their peaks????:happy
I still take Barkley. He was all wrong for Hearns with his rough, mauling style. Any Hearns at MW would not take Barkley...and I'm a Hearns fan.
HOW MANY TIMES DOES A GUY HAVE TO LOSE TO SOMEONE BEFORE THE WORLD BELIEVES WHAT IT SEES. What next? 1980 Hearns vs. Barkley w/ one leg. 84 Hearns w/ a hammer vs. blindfolded Barkley. Hearns driving a tank vs. Barkley in a rubber suit.
thanks!:happyI been kind of grumpy lately. a LOT of what I read on these forum pages is just assinine
I think Barkley just had Hearns number and would win no mater when they meet. vs. each other Barkely > Hearns. ATG. Hearns > Barkely.
You have to remember that Hearns was lighting up Barkley until getting knocked out in their first fight, so him winning one out of a series is not out of question. It's just that Barkley dealt well with punishment and always had the chance of coming back from a beating with one punch. One fight can be a fluke, but Barkley caught (an admittedly old) Hearns in the second fight as well and put him on the defensive. The man was a puncher and swarmed Hearns at all times giving him no rest, and Hearns wasn't going to back down. That was the best right hand he ever threw in his career and it happened to land flush on an unexpecting Hearns's chin.
If you don't want to see a Hearns in Tank VS Barkley in rubber suit match, I don't believe you're a true boxing fan.
I think Barkleys all wrong for Hearns. The best Hearns at 160(which isnt the best Hearns) should be considered an underdog in with the best Barkley. He showed in the first fight he had what it took to pull it off, but he also showed the barkley could put him away at anytime. The right hand was by far Barkleys weakest power shot.
You know Hearns was only 29 at the time, fighting at Middleweight. So he was not much removed from his best days. If they go at it 10 times I think Barkley would win 6 or 7 times out of ten.
Barkley caught lightning in a bottle first time. I think that Hearns would have won an immediate rematch. Second match was close. Barkley was a huge middle and did have a dangerous style for hearns but if you watch the first fight carefully you can see how dominant hearns was until getting too reckless.
