There was an interesting article in a uk paper today by barry mcguigan about how boxers are much fitter and stronger nowadays due to advanced training techniques

I do reckon that they take a smarter approach to training, But i still dont see a lot of boxers showing the stamina, speed and workrate of boxers from years ago.

    You have a link?

Anyhow, I think he probably know better than any of us. And, yes, I think he's probably right.

I would generally yes just due to training methods and supplementation (read into this what you may.) The heavies certainly were at their stongest and most powerful in the 90's.

He has a point but there are always exceptions, such as the example he used about Ken Buchanan. He may have used old school training strategies, but despite this Buchanan fought several hard fought battles even for 15 rounds where he kept up a fast pace. Being explosive is all good but you need the mentality to hang in there for 12 rounds (previously 15) and that's something many of today's prospects lack. They simply put run out of gas in the late rounds after expending unnecessary energy early on.

Obviously fighters like Pacquiao and Mayweather (atleast in his younger days) are about as well-conditioned as any man who ever fought, but we have the Jermain Taylor's, Miguel Cotto's, JuanMa Lopez's to go along with them.

In all eras new ideas come along. they are not all right for all fighters. For each new introduction to training that comes along there is an element of losing something else for each new thing that is gained, therefore all improvements by and large are relative and often cancelled out. The sport keeps evolving but it may not make it any better or worse in my book.

the short answer might be to ask are the fights any beter?

They have the access to better training methods and diet. However the quality of food from today isnt as good as it was 100 years or even 50 years ago. It gets worse every year.

there is more than one way to skin a cat.

all any boxer can do is work on his weakness and find what works for him.

I think you will see most trainers of his generation saying the same thing. The trainers at my gym do at least.
