    great great heavyweight fight betwen two top continders
    i really enjoyed this fight
    quarry was really good at doubleing the left hook, a thing of beauty

    a very close fight, i gave the slight edge to young
    but man norton goes to the body hard

    A decade in which every HW except of 3 men were inferior to George Chuvalo and Bob Cleroux.

    No outstanding #4 in the 70s , when except from Ali , Foreman and Frazier everyone else were inferior to Chuvalo and Leroux . And McCall (who won the title from one of the

    Yet Jerry Quarry whom was KOd by both Norton and Chuvalo is considered someone whom "would have won a title had he fought in any other era".
    The man was even floored by a past it smallish Floyd Patterson.
    And to get legitimately stopped by Ali is an unforgiven blemish for Lyle and Bonavena

    Ken Norton... Herculean physique, Sapphic chin...

    Jerry Quarry... a cruiserweight who would have had problems with the elite in any era after the one in which he fought.

    Ron Lyle... a huge, powerful heavyweight who never brought his KO skills to the elite, or even semi-elite level.

    Jimmy Young... Built a nice bed of laurels by beating a mentally broken Foreman, then proceeded to rest on these and various pieces of canvas around the globe.

    Fun to watch also-rans but also-rans none the less.

    mccall is a good heavyweight fighter with an iron chin and a good punch, he was no journeyman


    and why the hate on the 70's guys

    quarry one the greats never to win a title

    lyle, a huge powerful guy who almost beat foreman and beat shavers

    etc etc etc

    norton had an alright chin, being way past your prime and bombed out by monster punchers that happens
    he took many very hard shots in his prime and didnt go anywhere
    also had an interesting defence, with a wicked left hook and right hook

    jimmy young, excellent techical boxer, who did some interesting things in the ring and beat some great fighters, foreman,lyle,almost norton
    excellent counter puncher

    but then from your comments i assume you have never boxed, because it is clear you cant see these details when watching fights.....


    and about the discusson about some weaker guys getting to the top,
    happens in every decade
    in busy heavyweight divison of the 90's bruce seldon was a world heavyweight champion
    in the 2000's john ruiz was 3 time heavyweight champion

    are these garbage fighters, ofcourse not
    you dont become a world class guy without being an amazing talent

    are they are as good quarry or lyle
    no they are nowhere as good

    I was at the Quarry Lyle fight, Quarry was expected to lose like he was with Mac Foster, 2 undefeated guys....The garden roared....I was also at Ali-Shavers and Quarry Shavers...Quarry had no problem with the big slow guys...He had trouble with Ali and Frazier...and the will they had to win...I loved Quarry in a fight vs Foreman...that would have been a telling scrap

    I remember reading about Quarry v Lyle in Ring magazine,and watching Young and Norton four years later on tv. As you say,Cobra,the 70's had it all.
