Beating margarito will redeem him, but what else does he have to do to become a atg and do you think he can accomplish it?

I have always liked Cotto, but I don't believe he can. He's past his best, I think. And I don't think he was at that level when at his best in the first place. So I don't see any ATG-defining moments for him in the future. Excellent fighter but let's face it. He was only briefly ever seriously thought to be the best in any of his three championship divisions and that was for I think a matter of months before he lost his 0 and after Floyd was out of the picture, and I don't even think he won a fight in that period before Margarito stopped him. He didn't do enough against Pacquiao who, let's face it, doesn't stand in the welterweight rankings with history's best, even though he's rated that way p4p. He is a three division champion but never lineal. If he beat Pacquiao in a rematch or Floyd and avenged against Margarito...It's about as likely to happen as getting shot by a monk on PCP with a super soaker full of brandy, after winning a multi-million dollar lottery. It's possible but it's really, really unlikely. Terrific career but not enough. A win over Martinez? Not happening. There are ATG-making fights there for him...2-3...but it's not happening. He will go to the HOF though. I'm almost certain of that. Eventually anyway.

yeah, hes on the verge of it.

Obviously beat Margo and either unify + become undisputed at 154 or Fight and beat Martinez.

    NO.

Cotto was never a great fighter IMO, at his best he is a very good fighter & has a warriors heart but he falls just short of what it takes in my view.

I have grown comfortable calling him an "arguable great", personally. As in great for his time, for a short time.

The Margo fight is 50/50 & he aint beating Martinez in this lifetime... but he lost to Pacquiao so that puts him on the verge of ATG status in the opinion on boom boom

I can live with that.... ATG is beyond his abilities tho IMO but in this sport never say never.

if he gets a fight with mayweather and beats him, he would probably be an ATG on the level of barrera and morales or at least marquez. rematched pac and beat him, would do great. it's good that cotto has two ATG within his weight class so beating them would essentially short-cutting his way to that elite list.

As much as it pains me to say it, no, he'll never be an ATG. He's a level below that. Many would say he's only had one legitimate loss, but if he'd had the talent or potential to be considered an ATG, he'd have shown it against Pacquiao. I'm not saying he'd have to have beaten him, but at least give him more trouble than he did. He was dominated from the 4th round on.

Still one of my favorite modern era fighters though, with an impressive resume, which will be even stronger once he retires Margarito. ;)

I don't think he can. He hit his peak in 2007 and was past that by the end of 2008. He looked good during that period but it's far too little for an atg resume. People really thought he could beat Floyd during that time, they'd fall over laughing about it now, which shows how far he's fallen so quickly. He'll rpobably finish up in the next couple of years with another fight with Margarito and wins over guys like Pawel Wolak under his belt. He acheived no doubt but it's not a career that'll keep people talking about him for long after he's retired.
