I have to say Leonard outfought Hearns and he had to, but he didn't outbox him, mate. Ray had to go to a different place, step to Tommy and get in Hearns grill and dig bodyshots home. Hearns is almost impossible to outbox with his leverage, size, spacing, skill and power. Very few could do what Leonard did and he was a special individual. The only reason Leonard beat Hearns was because he had better stamina and the ability to fight through fatigue. On purely just outboxing him Leonard could never beat Hearns as we saw in the rematch. The prove of that stamina being the only difference between the two is Ray Leonard would always have a advantage over 15 rounds. If you watch the second fight Hearns outboxes him, but Leonard is getting to him and runs out of rounds. I believe if that fight was over 15 again Leonard would've got the same result as in the first. I'm actually starting to change my view on Hearns/Hopkins. Thinking about it i don't see how Hopkins would just 'spoil', be cautious not engaging Hearns and still win a decision.
You really think Hopkins could/would employ the same 'desperation' tactics and do what Hagler did, Tony? IMO that's not Hopkins' fight. Thinking about it whatever way Hopkins fought this fight he would be in serious trouble. If he attempted an Hagler he would get stopped and if he was the 'normal' Hopkins he would get outboxed. It's a bad style match-up for Hopkins here. I see him fighting a similar style to the way he fought Trinidad and he would lose.
As always with Hopkins, he will make things ugly. But, will spoiling Hearns' work and being negative win Hopkins rounds? I think Hopkins will make things difficult and make things dirty, but he's not active enough to take the majority of rounds. Hearns by UD.
I give this Hopkins by stoppage, I think Hopkins is too ring savvy for Hearns, against the ropes he would eventually tire the over eager Hearns out and begin countering with solid shots down the middle. Eventually calling a halt to precedings at 1.37 of round 11.
I just think Hopkins would have to take the sting off Monzon's shots and that would take a little while. IMO Hagler would give Monzon a tougher fight, it'd be a war and Monzon would win that too. I'm just really big on Monzon. He was very deceptive, but set opponents off and was just a beast. Imagine a middleweight killer Wlad Klitschko with all the inside intangibles.
I'm sorry, but this is not Tito Trinidad he's fighting. Hopkins couldn't tire and stop Jermaine Taylor, but he would engage and stop one of most remarkable, pinpoint power punchers in history? A man who skipped middleweight to knock down light heavys? 'Shots down the middle'? who do you think this is Ricardo Mayorga? lol Hearns would do what Jermaine Taylor did. The difference being Tommy punched harder, didn't telegraph his right hand, had supremely faster punch release, a top 5 ATG jab, murderous power and vicious bodypunching. Hopkins would give away too many early rounds just trying to survive.
Hey hopkins could take bombs and can frustate the best of punchers. I just get the impression he can frustrate Hearns and that would lead to Hearns tiring long before Hopkins. Just an opinion, don't get me wrong I like Hearns style but he didnt have the greatest of Jaws.
'Not the greatest of jaws' is a vague way of putting it. He didn't, but it wasn't so bad that he was chinny or it stopped him from being a ATG and winning these type of match-ups. Anyway, people get it twisted with Hearns. They focus on how he lost and not who he lost to. It wasn't his chin per se but his lung capacity. When you become fatigued and don't get your second wind quickly you become easier to hit and your flaws become magnified. Hearns fought with maximun effort with everything and because his resume is stella that flaw becomes more apparent. The problem for Hopkins is you have to have the right make up to take Hearns there. There is no way Hearns is getting tired with Hopkins trying to frustrate, potshot and counter. Hearns is too good for that, his ability is remarkable and his jab and right hand are probabily top 5 in history, how many fighters can we say that about? Hopkins requires that he take away your measuring 1 and therefore everything else that comes after it, but Hearns has too much variety to rely on just one shot. Like i said Bernard would try and fight a Trinidad type of fight and Hearns would eat him up.
I just feel if you have the noggin to go 12 with Hearns than you have a good chance of beating him with a late stoppage. I know how good Hearns was and yes he does have the ability to eat Hopkins but if it gets to 6 and Hearns is still looking then I'm sorry I favour Hopkins to stop him down the stretch.
Tough one, but a fight which would be a nightmare for Tommy IMO. I think Hopkins spoils him all night and makes him miss. Yes Tommy had a monster punch, but Hopkins has a damn good chin. Although he won't be able to take them all night, he will be able to take enough of them. Tommy gasses badly towards the end (SRL 1 for example) and Hopkins would captialise on this to win a fairly close UD.
