I think Cockell looks better on paper, greater punch variety, better lead and more correct stance. But Galento is strangely more effective in some way I can't understand. his simple, simple strategy of smothering in and mauling with his hook(a better moneymaker than anything cockell had), and using his physical strength to tire and force his fight works well. It ain't pretty, but it works.

Strangely I think Galento might actually be faster by a hair.

He could punch and he's unlikely to get flattened by Randy Turpin ?

No I disagree. I think you pulled out Cockell's best performance(which isn't all that impressive against an over the hill Lastarza) and compared it with Galentos worst performance(where he showed up overweight and out of shape). I think the Galento who fought Nova/Louis at 225-233lb was a different animal.

I once did a top 15 heavyweights of Marcianos era, and Don Cockell did not make the list. He wasn't that good. Tony Galento, on the otherhand, was the david tua of his era. He was immensely strong, had a cast iron chin, and had a wicked deadly left hook. Galento had Louis on ***** st a number of times. Cockell couldn't even come close to hurting or outboxing Marciano. Galento was 10x more dangerous than Cockell. I believe tony at his best would have flattened Cockell early. Cockell did not have anything in his repatroir that could keep galento off of him. Cockell's skills/speed were all average at best.

There are only two fights on youtube for Galento - the thrashing by Louis and the thrashing by Baer. So unless you want to see wrestling, that's all I can do.

yet he gave marciano a beter fight than rex layne? marciano made cockell look awful, and don was fat - but as a heavyweight don had a good run. he beat more at that time rated heavyweights than cleveland williams and mike dejohn ever did.

LaStarza looks dreadful there. Galento is far more dangerous, which is enough for me to say he's better. If only Cockell had Louis down and hurt. What a bum people would think he was.

galento and cockell were both good enough to fight for the world title. I could name many less worthy world title chalengers than those two, for some reason both cockell and galento's names come up whenever people talk of poor chalengers - mostly because they were fat- but both beat rated fighters and earned their shot and put up good efforts.

If this this thread is about who was the worst chalenger in history then it should not include either fighter. I think don cockel was more than a wee bit beter than a lot of chalengers for world titles and so was galento.
