Mayweather doesn't really have anything to do with it. Some very interesting numbers there though.

Marquez has twice proven a more than capable opponent for Pacquiao. There are both the same size. The only issue with weight is people believing that a match at 147 will benefit Pacquiao.

 

I don't think Mayweather is that much bigger than Pacman or Marquez though, not as much as is usually made out anyway.

He's had a good reach advantage over JMM alright, but the height difference is very small, only half an inch reported on the tale of the tape.

 

Yeah I think you're right. He did look bigger than Marquez. He also looked better than Marquez.

 

I've got no problem of going off in ring weights to see if a fight is fair or not, as long as the same standard is used for everyone and not just because they want to see 2 guys in weight groups 2 divisions apart get it on while not giving credit to another guy under the same circumstances.

Out of interest, would people see this version of Mayweather vs this version of Marquez as a fair fight despite one campaigning at 3 weight divisions higher?

That would have been a little more fair than the weight Floyd came in at against JMM. Also note that he has 2 inches on arm length which is quite considerable as well as a little height advantage. Add that to about 10lbs that Floyd outweighed Marquez on the night and it's clear to see that there's quite an unfair advantage.

Btw I still give Mayweather a lot of credit for the way he dismantled Marquez over 12 rounds. Despite the obvious size advantage he had, he was out of competitive ring action for over 18 months and still looked as sharp as ever. That's pretty impressive.

If Pacquiao/Marquez III happens, I'd expect their fight weights to be pretty similar with Manny being up to 7 lbs heavier.

Even if Pacquiao blows out Marquez, it won't be down to the weight. Remember Manny had him down 3 times in their first fight and put him down I think twice in the rematch. Marquez came back every time and made it competitive. Nothing says he won't be able to do that again.

 

Fact is, Floyd should've smashed Marquez and got rid of him. The manner of victory was not impressive IMO, despite how aesthetically pleasing it may have looked. Being defensively sound is being able to implement that when winning very impressively, not coasting around the ring and sporadically engaging.

Impressive would've been Floyd decimating Marquez after the 2nd round knockdown.

He made Marquez look like an amature and the reason most don't give Mayweather full credit for it is because it was so embarrassingly one sided.

That fight showed Mayweather's skill set was league's above that of Marquez and I'm in no doubt that he would have done it if Mayweather fought at any weight from 130 upwards.

 

Strange how Floyd got hit more often by Marquez than he did by either Hatton or Mosley......

 

Since when have we brought arm reach into it when giving someone credit for a victory? Do we talk down Froch's win against Abraham because he's naturally heavier, taller and has a longer reach?

Of course we don't, yet people want to gush over Pacquiao possibly beating Marquez in a weight division 2 divisions above what he usually fights in on the basis of Pacquio only being up to 7lbs heavier in ring? Even though Mayweather only came in at 152lb when he fought Marquez who came in himself at 144lb.

Sorry but you can't give one credit while seeing the other's victory as a blot on their resume, that is just plain bias.

I give Mayweather very little credit for beating Marquez and I won't give Pacquiao any for doing the same in this division either.

I can't agree with this - Mayweather showed that JMM couldn't get near him that night, blame it on weight or whatever, the fact still stands - it was an impressive performance.

C'mon Flea, you know it's not Mayweathers style to blow people out inside 2 rounds, even though he is perfectly capable of doing so - even though JMM's resilience is something to be marvelled.

 

I'm giving credit to Floyd's performance against Marquez and I'd give Pacquiao just as much if he does the same. Of course people's opinions are different and as you say some will be biased and not give Floyd the credit he deserves but I'm not doing that.

All I'm saying is that Pacquiao/Marquez III isn't physically as much of a mismatch as Floyd/Marquez arguably was.

 

Floyd was going for the knockout against Marquez. But if you look closely and i forget the round, he gets caught with a big right hand counter along the ropes and decides he better not take any chances and just get the decision.

Btw i would love to Marquez/Pacquiao again. I think Marquez' style will always off-set Manny.

 

Marquez will beat Pacquiao yet again. Not sure if he'll get the decision though. Marquez is just too skilled for Manny.
