I think of it more as a test, cutting out the weak links

My coach and I were reminiscing on my first ass whipping just the other day. A new guy was asking how long he would train before he sparred.

Coach said depends on you, but probably around 6 months. I said, I only trained for 2 months before you put me in there, AND you didn't show me any defense!

He laughed, and said "I know. The guy you were in with trained for over a year before he got in there. He was pretty tough, wasn't he?"

Thanks for throwing me to the wolves, coach!

Lol sounds a lot like my coach, "He's only 80 pounds heavier than you, you're not going to ask a guy at the club how much he weighs before you fight him!"

He also forgot to tell me the guy was a coach from a local university! :patsch

Oh, and he runs 10 miles a day...

Oh, and he's training for a national tournament...

Oh, and I only want you to throw the jab...no power shots

Oh, and he is going to throw whatever he wants....

Oh, and you can't land anything heavy on him....

    GO GET EM CHAMP!!

I did 1 round with that guy (Larry the Dentist), then a second round with a different guy (who I bested) and then a third round with Larry the Dentist.

Coach said he knew Larry was going to beat my ass but it was supposed to be "a learning experience".

UNC has a solid team. A few of them make it to nationals every year.

Well I got my ass kicked by a middleweight ( myself being af heavyweight) the other day. Being big doesn't matter If you can't catch them

Not using it as an excuse, but sure as hell made me a bit more unsure of myself. Unfortunately the way the local sparring events go when multiple gyms are participating, you don't get an opportunity to tell your opponent you are relatively new and want them to take it easy. I didn't care for that too much.

The coaches are a bit strange like that if you ask me. Hell, they wouldn't let me video the session. The whole thing was odd.

Needless to say, I'm alive and well and just finished 7 rounds of sparring yesterday. Saturday I'll be doing the same with a few guys in my weight class and we plan to work at a medium tempo.

    I'm trying to learn....

There are a lot of sadistic a-holes out there "teaching" Boxing. Unfortunately, so many guys just want "action" that those sadistic ones are the guys who rise to coaching faster than the guy who has you slipping jabs, rolling under hooks, and shadowing a partner's footwork for 2-6 months. That is "boring".

I didn't realize it, but I went through something similar when I first started. I was "fighting" regularly in the gym with random guys. Bloody noses and concussions. Didn't realize that I wasn't Boxing until I changed coaches. :conf

Glad to hear that you are back at it doing your thing. :good
