Leonard is just lucky he wasn't in there with the Duran of the barkley fight.See that cut Leonard received towards the end of the third fight? Imagine if he had been in there with Atlantic City-Duran - he would have pounced on Leonard and started ripping at the cut with his bare teeth the moment the blood started trickling.
Yep. Luckily it was only available in the UK on free TV, and shown a day or two after it happened I think. I'm not sure I even watched it at the time, probably heard it was a stinker. It should have been Leonard-Hearns 3 really.
It was live on Sky with Barry McGuigan & Frank Bruno who played the part of a pantomime zombie to a tee. I watched it last week for the 1st time in 20 years, it was worse than watching it live at the Mirage:-dead Leonards a ****:smoke
Yeah, my error. SKY had been around almost a year by that time. :good I didn't have SKY then. Thank God I didn't have to waste my time staying up to see it. Leonard-Hearns 2 was certainly on ITV, about six months earlier. Now that was an entertaining fight.
I used to love ITV in the late 80s, you would stagger home from club, turn on the TV, and there unannounced an entire bill!!! I remember Tommy/IranI, Williams/Czyz, Chavez/Rosario, Mayweather/Brazier, Hines/Hilton (Brilliant fight).... And if you missed anything, Saturday afternoon, it would be on again...
Yeah. Watching Hearns-Barkley 1 live on ITV in middle of th night was one of the best nights ever. All for free, proper thrills and spills. And no hype, just fighting.
Used to be on ITV "World of Sport" introduced by Dickie Davis at around 2.30 or 3.15:yep then it was the wrestling before final score Yeh on ITV at 10.30 on a wednesday night after news at ten & thats when they put on Duran/Barkley Even better if yer had the obligatory nicked VCR:thumbsup
Yeh i recall Hagler/Duran was on the following Monday night at 10.40, ****in zillions tuned in but the ****ers had a clitch & it came on in the 2nd round + a few rounds were cut out. No matter it was just great to have all the fight showing & rushing home with me chicken madras & bag of onion bargies settling down for the tear up happy days indeed:yep
By far the most boring big fight ive ever seen.. .I was really pumped for this and it totally sucked... Duran pawed but never really threw anything... .Leonard jabbed and rode his bicycle all night. Duran promised to say why he said No mas in the 2nd fight, and later said something like How dare you ask a fighter like me such a question lol.
I recall being sat in the Champions bar in the Sands straight after the fight & in a total daze of self denial & all i could here through all the self induced static was my mate screaming at me WE'VE BEEN ****IN HAD!!! WE'VE BEEN ****IN HAD!! I'am ****in tellin yah we've been ****IN DONE UP !! nnnnooooooooooooooooooooo, nnnnnnnnoooooooooo i wimpered & wailed:| roberto would'nt do that to us:bart not US!! no NEVER:yikes I just sat like a puctured balloon, head to one side & tongue lolling out, could'nt drink **** all, just sat in denial & shock that we'd been tucked up in style. My mate grabbed me & said come on lets **** off out of here & pack our bags:verysad Leonard promised everyone that he would'nt run & he was going to go for the KO from the 1st round & over power Duran as he had un-finished bizzness with Duran & Duran was over the moon at getting a chance to pay his back taxes so getting his U.S exit visa re-instated. At the afterfight love-in between Leonard & Duran....Duran said "Champagne for Ray & Beer for me" laughing his head off with arms around Leonards shoulders:yikes Yeh it took me a good 10+ years to face up too the reality of that night... we'd all been tucked in indeed but more so by that coniving **** Leonard. That fight actually ended Leonards career after he'd fleeced & humiliated Steve Wynn that night with that bull**** showing as he never fought in Vegas again. No casino would touch him, he was done, hence he had to **** off to NY as MSG was the only major city venue that would touch him.
YEs i was as dissapointed as you.. I was a young adult at the time and this was the first fight i actually ever paid for on PPV(my dad or family always ordered the others) My alll time favorite fighter Duran fought passive like his feet were in quicksand and Leonard was on his bike so much he made an older Macho Camacho look like a Young Mike Tyson.. First time buying a fight and learned a lesson about what fights to buy with my hard earned money. To this day i only buy guaranteed wars LOL... Im all about bringing a twelve pack or a pizza or maybe chipping in 5 bucks at family or friends fight partys now HAHAH!! I remember this fight was the Grand opening for one of the first New Age Super Casinos (Steve Wynns) Mirage.. There was a lot of hype for this one.
