For those who give a damn.... this series has been going on since March 8th. The last installment is next and it is going to be published on Monday -May 2nd. May 2nd is Cocoa Kid's birthday.

 

I have the manuscript all set but I'm reconsidering whether I want to include the essays covering more recent fights. I'm afraid those might "date" it.

I got the brush off by one publisher and am now considering getting an agent. I'm not big on self-publishing... I've yet to find a self-published work that is appealing to the eyes (the covers look like bad art to me) and I too often see bad margins and typos all over the place. I will go that route if I have to, but only after I exhaust other avenues.

PS/ That 'give a damn comment' wasn't a gripe, it's just how lower-class Bostonians like me happen to talk! I do appreciate the boost though.

His journey began with tragedy -dad lost at sea, mom dead soon thereafter. And looking back, that kind of set the tone.

I have a close friend of mine, a trainer out of Brockton who loves Sugar Ray Robinson so much he got a tattoo on his back that says "Walker Smith Jr." We met years ago after I recognized who that tattoo referred to. His jaw dropped because few knew that and probably also because I'm white and he ain't. Anyway, he just contacted me after reading Part 7 and he's more than mildly upset at his idol. His former idol. He is enraged that Robinson ran out on him not once but twice --and we talked about how fighters back then were frowned upon by other fighters for doing that because here's a man who needed a pay-day. Robinson denied him food for his table.

I had to rebuild his regard for Robinson, lest he go and deface his skin with a knife!

 

You got that right. Don't get too drunk or you might fall back into old habits and claim authorship of "Just Watch Mah Smoke."

This marks the end of his story and the end of this series. It reveals the last mysteries surrounding this great fighter, namely, what happened to him after boxing and where he is now. It sounds silly to say for a man born on this very day (May 2) in 1914, but this is cutting edge stuff.
