Awesome HD footage of Johnson destroying Jeffries

The music could not be more in sync with Johnson's style. I love the way the Piano in the background comes in as Jeffries is sitting on his back through the ropes at 5:50 like an old granny trying to get back to her feet after falling back on her old chair. HELP IVE FALLEN AND I CANT GET UP! Then Johnson knocks him onto his back again as the piano/violin music chimes in. Watch at 5:50 and on. So hilarious.

Johnson laughs at Jeffries best punch. Those uppercuts are menacing! Jeffries would have never stopped them. Those are brutal blows Jeffries was always vulnerable too.

At 4 25, Johnson is shown practicing his punching. It seems to me that he is practicing some type of overhand forearm smash. I have never noticed this punch before. Does Johnson strike with a forearm in actual fights? Is this some type of lossed punch that has since been outlawed or no longer used?

 

I noticed that too...He feints an uppercut then comes over the top with like a hammer smash. Seems deadly.

 

Tell you what. At his best Johnson was a force. I love Sam Langford but Ive said before and Ill say again Johnson would have been tough for him to beat. Bad size and style matchup.

That footage is all, I believe, culled from Unforgivable Blackness. One clip is curious to me as Im not sure Ive ever seen its origin. The clip of Johnson trying to catch the calf.

Im not sure why some are so quick to dismiss Johnson over Jeffries or Jeffries over Johnson. Both were tremendous athletes in their primes and would have put on a hell of a show.

Finally, I cannot stand when it stated that the film was stopped, particularly at that spot that is always shown. This is simply not true. That point is not the final round but an earlier round that is just repeated. In the unedited version not only do the police not stop the fight but it continues at that point and Burns doesnt even go down. In fact Ive found descriptions of the film from when it was exhibited and they state that all rounds are shown including the conclusion of the fight and post fight footage.

 

Nicely done. Great music and great clips. What most struck me is that Johnson's uppercut was fantastic.

Johnson didn't have the best Chin and he was fighting a guy that had been eating like a pig and drinking beer for 6 years. Not sure why he gets accolades from this fight.

 

Nice video....Johnson looked formidable although in all fairness Jeffires was more than likely in the same or worse condition than Ali was for Holmes and undoubtedly worse than Joe Louis was for Marciano...Louis was still beating contenders...Jeffires was out for 6 yrs had to lose 100 lbs at the age of 36 with no tune up fight and fight 15 rds against a great heavyweight....

Was Ali greater than what he showed in the Holmes fight...was Louis greater than what he showed in the Marciano fight...Jeffires had to be greater than what he showed in the Johnson fight with all the impediments age,6years off and inactive, losing 100lbs, no tune-up at the age of 36

Johnson had some great skills and was very fit but I fear how that Jeffires would have been murdered by Dempsey,Louis,Marciano,Lewis or butchered by Ali,Holmes,Tunney

I don't think even Johnson's number 1 fan would argue that the Jeffries that fought Johnson was anything but a shell of the man

James j Jeffries was after SIX YEARS out of the ring, hog-fat and age 35, was a shell of himself.More so than Ali or Joe Louis {Marciano }after their come backs .Jeffries didn't have a prayer to win, but gamefully stuck it out to the end,for FIFTEEN ROUNDS, in the afternoon heat of Reno.
Aside- I believe truly that Jack Johnson,would have found a way to whip Ali both in their primes. JJ was cat-like and super strong,and seldom extended himself, but when he did ,Johnson was tough to beat !

 

Hmmm... A shell can't go 14+ rds with a solid champ in 100 degree "Reno" heat.....

Yes, Yes... At age 35 in '10, Jim Jeff was no longer primed, but at 227 pounds and motivated I think he could've beaten anyone else in the top-10 on July 4, 1910...... Jeff was # 2.... Yes, Yes... # 2 lost the fight.....
