Have you noticed how the Jeffries fans dismiss this complete Mayweather-Gattiesque domination because Jeffries was too old (despite being only 3years older and in great shape), but rate Jeffries on the basis of going life and death with inactive ancient versions of Corbett/Fitz. Some of the same posters claim the equally inactive Leonard was cherry picking Hagler Double standards much? Oh I forgot Jeffries was as brain damaged as Ali atsch

 

Jeff's age of 35 and his trained weight of 227 were fine / good in 1910...... What hurt him most was the ring rust, etc..... Being absent from 1905 to 1910 is what robbed his timing and reflexes.... His shape was good for a man age 35 and fighting in high desert temps in '10...... In 1910, he was # 2...... Again, # 2 loses......... Jack Johnson was # 1 and won....... 'Nuff said...

Jeffries boosters neglect to say that Corbett was 33 and had been retired for three years,Fitz was 39 ,and had been retired for two years, then there is the little matter of the 27 and 47lbs both were conceding to Jeffries. Johnson was 32 when he met Jeffries ,Jeffries 35,and 19lbs heavier.Double standards.

 

Off my head, I thought Jim Corby was hatched in '64 and was age 37 in 1901 when he was fighting the 11 year junior Jeff for the title..... Or was Corby hatched in 1866? Goddammit, now I gotta go look......

Corbett's record going into the second Jeffries fight was hardly awe inspiring either , one win in 6 years, and that was widely considered to be a fake.

 

I've seen pix of that fight and Corby had that funny butt floss underwear going up his ass cuz of his safety cup, etc... But Corby was way small next to the buffed Jeff in 1901 or so....... Mismatch........

"Gentleman Jim" with Flynn and Bond from '42 is perhaps my favorite fight film from the classic era......... I scored the VHS yrs ago and I keep it in good shape.... I watch it 1 or 2 X a year....... No shame at all....

Is there a man in the history of the ring that took 5 years off, had to shed 80 pounds, had no warm up fights, then took his title from a champion in his prime? Nope. Yet he went 15 on his worst day in desert heat, fought cleanly and went out on his shield.


I would not describe Jeffries vs. Corett as " life and death " in either fight. Corbett was 33 in the first fight, and the score cards were close to even prior to the KO. Fitz likely cheated and loaded his gloves in the re-match.

 

I have Corbett's reported ring record with names as 59-0-3 before meeting Fitz. If you read the McCoy fight, it is full of heated exchanges. not a fix.

Has it gone down from the bull**** myth of shedding 100lbs to shedding 80lbs, the pre Johnson pix indicate he probably lost 40-50lbs. Being able to shed bodyfat while training usually sees conditioning improving significantly and you can be sure Jeffries preperations for this fight were some of the best of his life and that's why he looked so good physically

Yes Foreman took off 10years and had to shed tonns of weight, Tyson 5years, Leonard pretty much took off 6years, the murderer's row, Steele, Joe Louis, Conn were pretty inactive for WW2. Then there's Robinson 3years, Mayweather 2 years etc etc and ofcourse Corbett hadn't had a win in 6years when Jeffries fought him first time and hadn't fought for another 3years for the rematch

Jeffries-Corbett wasn't life and death mainly because Corbett was feather fisted but Corbett did box circles around him

Where does the Fitz glove loading talk come from?

 

Corbett claimed less than 30 fights.
