Who deserves to be rated higher,Ken Norton or Jimmy Young ?

Bottom line is he Young a good case for going 5years of his prime while facing Ali, Foreman, Lylex2, Shavers, Norton - that's a big deal and very consistant in his prime. Ken Norton and even Joe Frazier isn't managing that schedule even if Foreman did want another sip of water

Dempsey would have kept on top of Young, caved Young's ribs in and beaten him quite clearly.

But Young's unique ability was such that he could probably even turn a Dempsey fight into an all-time snooze fest.

Have to vote for Norton myself, had more wins against the better fighters ( the foreman bout aside) Jimmy could arguably have gotten the decision against Norton though imo.

 

Throw out Ali, and Ken's resume gets considerably diluted. I can't see Norton ever getting through four rounds with Cooney on his feet, let alone ten with Shavers or 12 with even the dehydrated Foreman who lost to Young. Jimmy beat Lyle twice conclusively. In defeating Jeff Sims over ten, Young also became the first man to hear the final bell against this hyped menace. (At the time, it was speculated that Sims might be the reincarnation of Liston.) A very strong case can be made that Ken would always get quickly knocked out by all five, as he actually was by the three of them he did take on. (Jimmy also ended the final winning streak of Garcia's career in 1974, fully a year before Ken avenged his 1970 knockout loss at the hands of the lanky Venezuelan.)

No question who the tougher man was. Jimmy was only floored by Shavers, while Norton sustained 13 career knockdowns.

However, Young did underachieve badly, while Ken made much more of what he had. But what Jimmy did between Shavers I and Ali, then from Ali to Norton, then in 1981 (when he was named Comeback FOTY) is formidable. Ken was far more consistent than the streaky Young, but got finished by Cooney in Young's final great year.

Rationally, Ken has to be rated higher on consistency alone, although Jimmy had more potential. Both had psychological deficiencies, Norton in response to being confronted with crushing power and high pressure bouts, Young in response to the setback against Norton, and failing to seize the day against a hopelessly out of condition Ali when the title was his for the taking.

On paper, this are hardly impressive numbers, and one really needs to read between the lines to interpret accurately. Did compete until nearly 40, never stopped after Cooney, and went out a knockout winner. Lost six straight from 1982 to 1985, but against a killer lineup which all had to settle for decision wins without having decked him. Nobody has ever accused Jimmy of ducking anybody, while Ken was carefully matched between 1970 and 1979 to avoid lethal punchers, only taking on Foreman because George held the title.

Five times over the distance during the 1970s, he was not awarded the decision, but could well have been on each occasion. The case has been made that he should be 4-0 against Ali and Holmes, and I think he was robbed by a hometown draw against LeDoux. . The four knockout losses are devastating, but the final statistics are superficially impressive.

 

Probably Young. He does have a win over Foreman and two wins over Lyle which I don't see happening for Ken. He even had a more competitive fight with Cooney than Norton did. Young gets sold short because there's not much footage of his aggressive side and he got robbed against Ali(basically the same Ali that many feel Norton should've got the decision over) and Norton. Young's team was less cautious than Norton's team too. Young only got stopped(w/out cuts) by Shavers which is pretty damn impressive and that was a Young that was pretty green in his career yet held his own. They're pretty close and I don't have a problem with people having Norton over him but H2H Young ranks higher. They aren't great but very good and with the HOF being so leniant I'm not surprised that Norton got in. Norton was never great but very good and his awkwardness & bodypunching served him well.
