Older fans: Some questions about PPV before Tyson

In the UK it was done by satillite link up at cinima's, usually London (Leicster Square) Manchester/Glasgow/Newcastle/Bristol/Southampton all depending what local bizzman bought the package. I watched Hagler/Hearns down in Portsmouth Guildhall at 5.30am on the tuesday morning.

That was done by Frank Warrens "Veiwsport" & 3,000 of us rammed in pissed up. Absolute Mayhem:yep Never forget it what with it split down the middle between marv & tommy. Only bummer was being subjected to 3 hours of frank Bruno highlights before the red dot on the screen started pulsing & it zoomed down into the vegas strip & an almighty animal roar nearly took the roof off:happy ****in GAME ON as we say:bbb:thumbsup

 

They have done it again here in some local theaters. I think the last Mayweather fight was broadcasted in some of the theaters.

The closed circuit at the theaters was awesome.
Many folks in attendance would actually dress to the hilt, tux/evening gowns and all! Quarry/Frazier I was my first (Soph. in HS) Also:

Duran/Leonard 1 etc...
I remember my dad going to the Circle theater and waking me up telling me that my hero Floyd had gotten ripped in the first by Sonny in 62 and crying myself back to sleep.
Of course in the 60's and into the 70's many championship and elimination fights were on regular TV!!! The list was endless.
In the sixties Griffith/Napoles/Benvenutti/Tiger, etc...
The HW elimination tourney (67-68) was all televised (Saturday afternoons)
Saw Patterson/Ellis live on Wide World of Sports (broke patio furniture after decision )
Late 70's, early 80's continued to have tons of great fights on regular TV.
Ah, the good old days...

 

It was shown on a Tuesday evening on ITV, at 8 pm.
The fight had actually taken place on the Monday night in Las Vegas (early hours Tues GMT), so if you could go a whole day without hearing the result you're a better man than I am.

It may have been broadcast in cinemas live, I don't know.

Interesting how the big fights used to take place on Mondays etc. instead or Fri or Sat nights.
I think Ali-Frazier and Tyson-Spinks were monday nights too.

 

My first closed circuit fight was in Feb. 1970...Joe Frazier-Jimmy Ellis...2nd was Ali-Frazier 1 in 1971....

In Belfast (which some would argue is the UK, but i dont wanna start going down that road) im pretty sure it was PPV, cos i remember a top hotel showing it and the place was crawling with scumbags and drug dealers who caused murder in the place

 

I was quite young then and we hadnt got a remote control nevermind teletext. Plus the fact the news wasnt allowed on incase anyone heard the result and gave it away

 

You may of got it by a Republic of Ireland affiliation, but the first PPV on SKY was Tyson/BrunoII. It linked up with their history; Bruno/TysonI, being the start of their mainstream appeal.

Maybe if it was in a Hotel it could of been a local Closed Circuit deal, or perhaps the Hotel charging people a premium to watch SKY?

 

All plausible i agree, makes sense, though the money they were charging in takes SKY outta the equation. Think it was £20 or £25 a head , which was pretty expensive
