Yes. He was a plodder though and wouldn't fair well H2H against a lot of fighters. Accomplishments, certainly. Edit. P4P? No ****ing way.
Good post except when you keep in mind he was only 200 in his prime he could be top ten pound for pound as well.
Joe Louis was one of the greatest fighters pound-for-pound of all-time. Top 10 ? Yes, he arguably is. Or top 5 even. Look at his record, look at the footage. Look at what people said about him who saw him. Many people have some problem with giving heavyweights their dues, p4p.
Depends what you like. Louis was just as good. If Pep could have knocked out 200+ men like Louis could, he probably would have fought like him.
#9 All-time in my list... Boxing's greatness comes from intangibles, mixed with the brutal methodicalness of Science; that no other sport, can quite produce. It is an art and sport; what is humanity. So to rely on just judging on modern training techniques, is to truly miss the point. For starters, Louis was a brilliant boxer, who had a natural talent that was developed by a quality trainer. The torque in his punches compares to or normally surpasses any other Heavyweight. A brilliant athlete, Louis again compares to any of his peers in this category. But what makes him that little greater is the intangibles. Sure timing helps his cause, but Louis the icon has virtually no peers, and added to this sporting brilliance, I believe now, he deserves a spot in the top ten finest fighters of all time
For me, it is soft enough after my top 6 or 7 that I could see him at 9 or 10. But I have him at 14-18.
True It's all subjective. I don't believe that for a second, Pep had a natural rythm and grace, Louis was a plodder, power doesn't come in to it. Robinson had power, it didn't diminish his other attributes.
So now the HW with the longest title reign, tons of knockouts, a variety of styles beaten(some of which are a natural foil for him),10-0 in rematches and three decades of title fights doesn't fair well H2H? ****ing nonsense I say. Louis was not a "plodder". He was a standup classic boxer and he was the best, he didn't need to run around in circles. He'd use his footwork to draw people in and nail them with counters. He's the best at it ever. And he used those feet to put like TBooze said, unbelievable torque on his punches, short or long. How does Louis not look good on film?
