BTW, Tim Coleman is still on the card (he just refused to face Peterson on such short notice). He is in soft with 25-6-2 Sergio Rivera.

First up is unbeaten Hylon Williams Jr. against Marcos Herrera (who recently lasted seven and a half rounds with Michael "the Artist" Perez on Solo Boxeo) in an 8 round lightweight bout.

Round 1

Williams is landing his jab stepping in rhythm, darting in and out at diagonal angles from the outside. Now a good 1-2 by Williams. Herrera is trying to time Williams with his slower jab and 1-2 but not finding much success. Williams is both the aggressor and the more effective defender. Nice body sequence by Williams, doubling left hooks to the body and then flurrying with both hands up top. Herrera is staying tall and leaning down and back, away from Williams' jabs. He's still getting hit with most of them, and taking lots of shots along the belt line. Herrera is trying to walk him down and trap him against the ropes and gets him there for just a moment before Williams spins him with a flurry. Williams is using just enough foot movement to elude Herrera, very economical without being hurried. Herrera is lunging, but not getting countered much. Williams just popping jabs from outside.

Round 2

Herrera tries to hunch over and land jabs and hooks from a lean-over while scrunching his left shoulder up to protect his chin. He isn't quite fluid enough to pull it off and is neither landing nor avoiding Williams' counter jabs. Herrera presses in and carries Williams to the ropes but doesn't work once there. Williams shoeshines and hooks to the body, staying busier. Now Herrera tries some uppercuts but they slide against Williams' guard. Williams is the only one body punching. Herrera's corner screams for him to work downstairs as well. Williams tags him with a nice 3 punch combo while backing up. Very nice stuff by Williams. Herrera comes tomahawking forward, staying right in Williams' face but getting blocked a lot. Now Herrera gets slightly dirty, elbowing Williams and giving him a little forearm shiver to back him into the ropes and then try to tee off with body hooks. Williams answers back with some VERY nice combination body punching, fast sharp shots all while still defending. Now a combo upstairs. Herrera blasts him twice just at the bell.

20-18 Williams

 

Round 3

Williams jabs and takes quarter-steps around Herrera. Quick, steady, measured footwork by Williams - and only jabbing when in range to land...wasting nothing. Herrera keeps trying to limp into him, rocking forward toe-to-heel and hooking away as hard as he can but hitting arm. Williams is letting Herrera outwork him, though. A couple of jabs by Williams, and a 1-2. Now they trade back and forth, with Williams blocking in a high guard and then peeking out to the side to fire quick blast flurries.

Still a Williams round, although he needs to step it up to maintain Herrera's respect or hope to stop him. 30-27

 

Nonito Donaire is ringside (literally, by the apron) with a big ass camera!

Apparently he moonlights as a photojournalist when not boxing, according to Tessitore. :blood No ****.

 

Round 4

Herrera is coming forward throwing hard shots now, insistent on bullying Williams against the ropes. Herrera keeps him there for most of the first minute, slamming away with both fists and just catching a few exposed bits of his head between the gloves but still being the boss in the pocket. Williams circles him back out to the center of the ring and starts throwing quick, snappy flurries in between his chopping blows. Williams tries some fancy stuff, bucking Herrera back with a chest-bump and tilting his neck back...but eats a right hand in the process. VERY FAST combo by Williams, shoeshining, maybe 15-20 punches in just a couple of seconds and not slaps either. They keep trading toe to toe, with Herrera pushing Williams back and chopping away but getting flurried right in the face.

40-36 Hylon Williams Jr.

Someone with a stylistic bias for Herrera's style (or against Williams') might have it a draw at this point with Herrera coming on stronger in the last two, but they'd be wrong

 

Round 5

Herrera starts with hooks to the hip and then starts pushing with his right forearm to rock Williams back and off balance so he can land more. Pretty good strategy, as he's effective in roughing him up and pushing him back for a while. Williams is trying to get his jab asserted but Herrera is diving through it and lunging with rights. Williams tries to take a quick lateral step while popping the jab, and is effectively getting Herrera out of position with enough time to get off some punctuating double left hooks to the body before Herrera can spin around to face him. They stay toe to toe, with Williams leaning in guard-first and just absorbing Herrera's sloppier stuff for several seconds at a time before unleashing faster and crisper shots in brief spurts. Williams needs a big last thirty seconds to not have given away this round. Herrera is just staying on him too consistently. Herrera lunges in with a long right and gets Williams to back up, throwing and missing a counter jab. They come together again and Herrera lands a short chopping shot, grazing Williams' face.

49-46 Williams

 

Not sure, ran to the little butt's room during the intros. I'll try and ID him during the scorecard reading. :good

 

Round 6

Williams jabs and moves, very smooth. Herrera is staying close, throwing slow straight right leads from the outside while chasing and then chopping with both hands when he gets Williams navigating the ropes or corners. Herrera leans in and throws a hard right uppercut to the chest, then a left hook to the top of the trunks. Now a right to the body by Herrera. Williams is still putting on his earmuffs and letting Herrera rock him around a little and then answering with intermittent fast but short flurries. Williams complains about a rabbit punch, although he is ducking in a bit (not excessively, though). Herrera pushes Williams to the ropes and works hard for the last ten seconds, out-throwing Williams about 10 to 1.

58-56 Williams

 

Round 7

Herrera continues to stalk and try to gain entry with his slow right hand lead, but eats jabs and can't quite get Williams to back all the way into the ropes before quickly circling out. Herrera targets the body a bit coming forward, but still can't find anything solid. Williams keeps giving up the chase and leaning in, protecting himself up high and letting Herrera flurry to the body with wide slaps down low. Williams keeps springing around, stepping just enough to keep Herrera following. Shoeshine by Williams high and low. Herrera dives in to shoulder him to the ropes but can't keep him there. He quickly gets free, and lands a quick right uppercut while still turning Herrera.

10-9 Williams, he's regained generalship.

68-65 Williams

 

I've bumped into him here at the bathroom during the shows here in Chicago, which he does every month or so when they have them. He does FNF a lot too. Like his voice a lot more than David Diamante.
