Ya think the 'Burns-Patrick' scene is out front of a cinema??

Been mentioned that a realistic figure of those who payed to view the entire fight on film could be around 3/4million people.

 

Well, 40 KOs from 44 wins does suggest a good whack in either hand. He was not worth his salt against a fast moving/footed fighter, yet the flashy feet in the late 40s, early 50's were more moving forward to engage in a fight. Ernesto Aguilar danced rings around Elley, switch hit, countered with ease...making Elley look helpless. Vic Eisen and Cecil Schoonmaker tried to engage, got tagged and woke up back in the USA.

Those who speak of him, Ern Jnr, Trevor King, Bryan Membrey etc. do suggest he seemed too kind to hurt a fly. McQuillan says "He was a gentle, gentleman".

Membrey talks about being in the car with Elley following a night in Melbourne when Elley diced Bluey Wilkins (just not on boxrec??). Elley was asked why he didnt stop the fight early ..

"That red haired kid was so nice to me.. I didn't want to hurt him"

 

Uncle Sam?? nah mate.. lol

How good was Bill Lang?

I know his record is average to the eye but he did take on the hard fights....and whats with all the DQ's?

 

Lang was obviously one of the rarer Oz H/W gems. He's the only one to have claimed the H/W crown four times.... although, he had to wait for Tommy Burns, Sam McVea and Sam langford to leave here, in order to claim the throne twice out of four times.

Not sure about the DQs.. probably ill tempered.

His resume is on par with the VERY best in Oz history. Plenty of legends he faced.

I remember that Fammo and Rose half spar night, they were told to temper it down; the photo of Fammo and Rose was then repeated regularly, and always teazed the question to every avid boxing fan, who would win - Fammo or Rose?

PS PS PS: In that other, Lionel Rose photo with all those young kids at a boxing gym (?) one gloved up, did any of those kids go on and become note worthy in boxing? (I think the priest got a gig on Father Ted one night, he looks familiar)

I met Elly in 1960-62 at the Woolongabba Buffalo club turnout.
It was a sunday & he'd just finished playing cricket.
He was alert & bright.
We had talk about him & fighters of his era & had a couple of beers before he was called away. He was very popular.
What struck me most was this lamb-like demeanor.
If I hadn't had his photo on my wall as a kid, I wouldn't believe it was him.
