The point I made. That while he can submit second-order fighters all his best victories have come via decision. So the idea that if this goes to the ground St. Pierre's getting immediatedly submitted is slightly silly - Mayhem, Henderson and Kampmann all went the distance against Shields without getting caught or even coming close to getting caught. Now of course anything can happen but based on what we've seen a Shields submission victory is distinctly less likely than a GSP knockout victory.

well I understand what your saying in that regard. But in this situation I believe Shields knows how urgent it is for him to make the most of any advantage he has.

Standing shields wont get a victory IMO, he knows he must get it to the ground and try and end it. I also wonder how good Gsp's submission defence is off his back.

I dont think a submission will be easy, or will happen right away, but this is shields best chance at victory and might be a weakness for gsp (see hughes fight and Abu dabi match, this was a long time ago I know before Gsp was a blackbelt but it still might be relevant)

Miller was close to being submitted several times, he just has a habit of escaping these,

    Hendo is an excellent wrestler,

I think it would be a big upset if Shields were to win, but the chance he does is mostly on his grappling.

I have not seen the Shields of recent fight urgently, but I think that GSPs stand up will change the situation. :good

Miller close to being subbed? What round was this??? I can remember the last round Jake briefly had Miller's back, but Miller managed to scramble back to half guard. To be honest I cant recall 1 significant sub attempt from Jake, let alone being close to being subbed several times

Hendo is an excellent wrestler, but he isnt much cop off his back. Been a weakness throughout his career

5:00 - Grabbed Millers leg during the scramble. Where's the sub attempt?
8:20 - Tried to set up a RNC. Didnt even get his forearm under the chin. No sub attempt there
9:50- WTF! Not even an attempt of a sub let alone close
11:00 - Same as 8:20 but even less sucessful
24:00 - Seriously you need to learn the difference between wrist control and a submission

Now I may be mad but Im not blind fella

    Again with the insults...
It would have been sub attempt if he had done what Frank Shamrock said and yanked the free leg of Miller. He didnt...

GSP is a play it safe type of fighter which will make it harder for a BJJ to catch him with something unexpected. GSP will be the dictating the pace and where and how the fight takes place. He has many speeds and facets to his game, which will keep Shields guessing. In other words, Shields, stylistically, has his work cutout for him due to his one dimension.

I think your definition of a sub attempt is 95% of a sub,

I don't mean to insult you, you clearly have an excellent knowledge of MMA, but to say Miller was not in danger of getting subbed 4/5 rounds is false.

He wasnt, Jake didnt even complete the attempts to make it close. It wont be any different if he gets GSP on his back. Unless Georges gifts him the sub, Jake will maintain the position as he want nothing to do with GSP on the feet

Disagree, Jake could have had those, but Miller always had enough energy to escape them at last moment,

It will be different with GSP, Jake will be more worn down from GSPs stand up so I do not think he will be able to keep GSP on the run like he did Miller.

I agree with Stoo here. The only way GSP is getting subbed is if he gets rocked by a "Serra like" haymaker first and taken down. He's too quick, strong, explosive, and greasy :hey to be subbed. Also, this will only go to the ground if GSP takes it there, and in that case Shields will be on his back. GSP keeps way too good of distance for Shields to take him down. I DEFINITELY could be wrong though. I really want to see GSP lose a friggin round at least

And I also think it IS a good point that all of the world class fighters Shields fought he beat by decision, not submission. Same can be said for GSP though. (Penn was a corner stoppage). That is because both of these guys don't want to risk losing control though. In this fight, Shields may chance it and go for something big on the ground. Whether it will work or not is a completely different story. :good
