U, of course Tunney should be in the "argument". But not at P4P. He never had to handicap himself giving away weight as the smaller Greb did throughout his career . Having said that, I honestly think that the Tunney of
the Dempsey and Tom Heeney fights would have won a decision from Ali
were they to have met. Gene could do everything Ali could do except
Showboat. Tunney was all business, like a surgeon, smart, a sharp right-hand puncher, sturdy, and a no nonsense attitude. He was just entering his peak when he retired after marrying a wealthy socialite...:hi:

    I agree.
Tunney is the only HW champion to retire right at the peak of his powers, and stay retired.
Even Marciano had probably begun to slip when he hung then up.
And Jeffries made the mistake of coming back.

Gene Tunney is one of the greatest fighters ever, but he could'nt do everything Ali could do, He's more limited than Ali, he goes straight down the middle most the time and never really mixed it up and use angles.

Muhammad Ali use's more head movement, faster punches, and many more angles and better footwork and bigger variety of combinations.

    Ali's the better fighter.

Gene could do a lot of stuff Ali couldn't do. He was a much better body puncher and infighter, and a very accurate KO puncher to boot. I'd also say he uses better angles than you give him credit for as well.

Yeah, but nobody said "Ali can do everything Tunney can do."

Someone did say "Tunney can do everything Ali can do", which is ridiculous.

Ali's just as good on the inside, Tunney's power no better than Ali's and the record of who they KO'd proves that,

He's doe the same things most of the time, watch he's film, he circle's stop throw's 1, 2 then gets out, he use same thing most of time, because its effective, but it shows he's limited hes knows what he's good at and what he's not good at.

don't think i'm putting him down because I rate him very highly, but Ali is more multi dimensional and a better fighter.

Have a little look at the elite chins that Ali cracked. The man could punch when he decided it was time.

No way. Ali has a powerful, strong clinch but he doesn't do effective work inside of it or up close. I would say gene had much better punch variety than you're giving him credit for as well, he had a damn good left hook, better than Ali's IMO. Plus it's not like Ali had tons of versatility in approach or punch variety either...

You have a good point. They're probably equivalent as punchers when I think about the KOs Ali did have.

I think evidence for them being "equivalent punchers" are skant. I think Ali hit harder.
