Salvador Sanchez and Henry Armstrong are the most formidable by a margin

Dixon reigned supreme for about 5 or more years as a featherweight.

McGovern had more featherweight defences than bantamweight.

Fenech was an absolute beast at Featherweight, although admittedly his broken hands nearly cost him dearly and if they dont hold up, he would probably be found out at the highest level. Still a formiddable head to head opponent for anyone at the weight though.

Yeah, but both guys routinely weighed in around 118 pounds. In fact, wasn't the Featherweight limit lower in those days?

Fenech would fare a lot better at Bantamweight in my opinion, where he was a physical monster to compound his style.

I am not sure, maybe i need to do a bit more research on the era and division at the time. But George Dixon kept raising the weight limit, so i doubt he would have any problems making and filling out the featherweight limit. McGovern also had no problems with making the weight and Fenech well any problems he would have were obviously in getting down to weight.

LOL at Sandy Saddler over Willie Pep. Pep should be number 1 on all lists. In his prime, he beats everyone on the list. Henry Armstrong would give him his toughest fight.

Thats just opinion while Saddler's record against Pep is 3 - 1 ( 3 KO's) in the Hd 2 Hd match up is fact, Pep's was always a better boxer than Saddler no question about it but he could'nt handle the pressure as the fights started going in the mid part of 3 of the 4 the fights.

Its unfair to be so dismissive of Saddler accomplishments on Pep being past it, when Pep was having no problem with anyone else at the time.

Yeah, Pep's undefeated streak is utterly massive, if he was done, he was only so done that the only fighter in the world that could take him was Saddler.

H2h lists are always unclear, but here especially so. Saddler was expert in finding the line. In his own time, with is own physicality he's a tough tough match for anyone and a fine shout for the top spot. But how does he dounder different rulesets etc. Hard to speculate. I have no problem seeing him above Pep though. He did win their series, people get hung up on how he "looked" but it's how he looked mashing upone of the best ever.

Yeah Saddler's wins over Pep are the most dismissed probably in history, I like Pep much more as a fighter, but I always give Saddler his dues.

On a consistent basis Pep would need to be exponentially, massively, uberly awesomely better than how he looked circa Saddler to justify his rep, even though he still has the look of a special fighter about on par with the other technical boxing featherweight greats.

    Justsaying.

I think that's fair, but then he did run into a fighter with the method, ability and under a ruleset that allowed him to be made to look only excellent  It's true that his record is quite padded, and that Saddler was the best he fought, but it's also true that he looks special defensively on film versus other fighters. Moreso than he does against Saddler. I think you can justifiably rank him very very highly based upon what's out there.

Yeah, of course you can.I guess it would take seeing a really really special performance to live up to the romantic reputation a guy like Pep has.

The stuff we have doesn't really deliver it, though if you put expecations aside you can still see a gifted talent as i said.

kalule would probably take past prime post planecrash Pep though.;)

Saddler eats Sanchez's lunch, slaps him around for a bit, pushes him on the ground and won't let him get up, calls over his friends and lets them do it for a bit, takes his drivers licence and says:

"You might know who I am, but I know who you are."

And sends him on his merry way.
