Trouble is that it's easier said than done to take a guy like GSP to the floor. Watch his second fight with Matt Hughes for proof of that.
But yes, Shields should have tried more.

Although I think once GSP's eye was hurt, Jake tried to capitalize on that by keeping the fight standing and throwing his right to George's left side. And after the injury, Shields was more effective with his strikes so it wasn't a terrible strategy.

 

He lacks balls in there but he will be hard as **** to beat, even from Silva.

 

If GSP has no killer instinct what does that say about his opponents who have been dominated by him?

Sure, I'd love to see him finish more fights. But, considering how many times we see guys gas after the 1st or 2nd round, it's a testament to GSP as an athlete that he can fight so effectively for 5 rounds.

I guess he could have come out last night like a bat of hell in the first round and tried to finish Jake, and then get throughly dominated on the ground for 4 rounds like Dan Henderson did. Would that make everyone feel better?

Be great if he could use his intelligence to win 'fights'.

As it stands, he's too self-aware IMO. He probably knows he's got a poor chin I reckon, which is why he does enough to stop his opponents doing anything, but only shits them down and doesn't shut them OFF.

Talented, athletic (midsection looked fleshy last night mind) and always very well-prepared.

Of course, and those are commendable attributes to possess.

But it doesn't make him a great fighter IMO.

 

I disagree. He's dominated all the best his division has to offer (and it's a deep division). That's an incredible achievement.

He does what he has to do to win. Yes, last nights fight left a lot to be desired, but he still won pretty handily. We are holding GSP to an incredibly high standard now because he has been so dominant.

Funny, I bet all the people who were picking Shields to beat GSP last night are trashing George today because he wasn't more aggressive. Perhaps some of the criticism should be directed toward Shields who couldn't execute a winning game plan.

 

I picked GSP to win, but GSP himself said that he wanted a knockout, so he sub-performed.

 

I agree. But fighters often predict winning by KO and they don't. Shields is a tough guy and is it that shocking he wasn't KO'd?
Dan Henderson, one of the hardest punches in the universe and a division heavier than GSP couldn't do it, so why on earth would we expect GSP to?

But yes, if you are going to hold GSP to the standard he set for himself in the pre fight talk, then I suppose he underperformed. But I also seem to recall Shields predicting he would win the fight. Things don't always turn out the way you hope they will.

 

The original gameplan from what I gathered was to get close to GSP and clinch him and go from there. When GSP got injured, Shields started targetting the eye and using his jab and straight very effectively, so I give credit to him for that, but he should've used his strengths at the end of the day. I think if his corner had told him to push it to the mat, and if he'd worked it more into the gameplan, he would've had a better chance.

You can just tell that when ever asked about the Silva fight GSP doesn't want any part of it.

 

I do think I'm being a bit harsh on GSP...I'll come back in a few days when I'm not having 'post fight-night syndrome' :good

He was in with Shields who ate a Hendo right hand and still won the fight. They guy isnt easy to finish. If you expected anything different then your an idiot....oh wait

 

I seriously doubt Silva will go down to 170 to fight George. A catchweight of 178 maybe, but not 170.

Of course, Silva could go up to 205 and fight Jones. That's a option as well.

Why is George a coward because he won't move up in weight and fight Silva, but Silva isn't a coward because he doesn't want to fight Jones?

 

And yes, Shields fought like an absolute ******.
