ezzard charles vs jack dempsey

This would be a much closer fight than people think. Charles is hands down far more skilled than anyone dempsey ever fought with the exception of tunney(who shutout dempsey twice). Charles has some serious speed and skills that could make any ATG swarmer look bad. Dempsey was an all time puncher and finisher, with a vicious demeanous, and I think Dempsey will eventually find Ezzard and put him away in the 11th or 12th, but Charles would be ahead on the scorecards. I could see Charles counter right hand and long sharp left hooks spelling big problems for Dempsey, but Jack will also give charles major problems on the inside with his superior power and combination punching.

 

This would be a great fight and a dangerous one for Charles, I see Dempsey having some very good moment because Charles was'nt much of a mover at Heavyweight he'd stay at center ring which was where he was most comfortable so Dempsey would'nt have to chase as much, but Charles proved is toughness and edurance at Heavyweight, so I think Charles controls this with his jab to keep Jack a bay, Jack might score a knockdown but I think Charles gets through any tough moments and wins pretty handily on the scorecards

Agreed although I'd rate Charles skills above Tunney's its a close call

While dangerous early, Dempsey rarely broke fighters down and scored late KOs

I actually would argue that Charles was the better faster combination puncher

Overall I find this a tough call, Charles is actually more proven against better opposition, he's probably 1 of the most underrated HWs there's been. He's the much better technician and as a puncher he could certainly knock out sub-200lb HWs. But you can't write Dempsey's power and relentless aggression

 

Curtis Sheppard was surprised when Charles lost to Marciano, as he thought no-one Charles' size could beat him.

 

Dempsey statistically doesn't KO past the 7th. He never did it once.

I would still favor him though. Prime for HW prime i see a big strength, speed, and power gap. I think that we saw Charles give the Rock a damn tough fight. But it still gave us an idea of how his style works with a top flight swarmer. I dont see Charles' legs being good enough to pull a Tunney of sorts, his movement wasn't like that.

Dempsey KO5 Charles. And I'm a bigger Charles stan.

 

Strange, wasn't that also true of Lewis and Tyson bar one or two knockouts?

 

I have never looked at Lewis' stats with an emphasis on judging the qualities of his knockouts(mostly because he bores me to death for everything but 1:30 of a fight) but Tyson for sure. Tyson and Dempsey are pretty good parallels, frontrunner mentalities, inconsistent technicians, schooled in legendary fights etc.

Tyson loves Jack Dempsey. Probably his favorite fighter.

Definately something that has to be factored in H2H.

I was aware of Tyson losing a lot of edge as the fight wore on, funny that one of his idols and biggest influences had the same weakness.

I'm pretty sure the same was true of Lewis, but Lewis was very safety first a fair ammount of the time. Where as Dempsey and Tyson would keep on at it but seemed to lose something along the way.

 

It's very rare for a superheavy to have genuinely good stamina. In today's day and age, i'd probably be quite suspicious of a guy being all that, above 230, and good for all 12. You probably have more experience with that notion being a sparring partner yourself. What do you think about correlations between size of larger heavyweights and activity/stamina?

 

S,Let me remind you Dempsey kod Bill Brennan in the 12th round ,breaking Brennan's ankle in the fall to the canvass. Dempsey true was a fast starter, but knew how to conserve his energy. He beat wily Tommy Gibbons easily
in 15 rounds, winning the late rounds. From Nov,1918, to Sept,1923,his last fight before going Hollywood Dempsey,had 9 fights,koing 7 opponents,and winning two decisions,so Jack Dempsey didn't have to go to the later rounds for a ko.
