Okay sit down as I explain this really slowly. Point One - Despite people talking about fighting and martial arts and warriors, MMA is a sport with codified set of rules and juding criteria. Point Two - The winner of a match is not necessarily the person who won the 'fight' but can simply be the person who best met the judging criteria. Point Three - Against Shogun at UFC 104 and Rampage 123 Machida ceded the advantage by allowing himself to be pushed against the cage and held there. Rampage was even able to take him down a couple of times. Point Four - This tactic is a common way for wrestlers to steal rounds without actually doing much. As I clearly said I didn't agree with Jackson walking out the winner of the fight but based on the way the scoring system works I wasn't surprised and nor should Machida have been. Point Five - The tactic was created by one Randy Couture. Couture had turned down every opponent the UFC offered him and demanded the chance to face Machida. In an interview with myself this week, Dan Henderson basically came out and said Couture planned to use it at UFC 129. Point Six - Machida stymied this plan by altering his game and removing the weakness Couture hoped to exploit. He was very quick to explode off the cage if pushed there by Couture and was much quicker around the ring than he had been in his previous three fights. Point Seven - If Couture had faced Machida in November before Jackson had exposed this flaw in Machida's game then its possible that Machida would have made the same mistake against Couture that he did against Jackson - giving away rounds by falling into the trap of letting a wrestler tie him up against the cage.
