    Popped a vein under the skin. It's simply a big ass bruise, it's just easier to see because the skull really forces it out.

    There's been a worse one than that in some kickboxing bout. It was a clash of heads and one guy (the guy the was winning and continued to do so) ended up with half his head/face swollen up like a beach ball.

    Its called a Haematoma. They're common in combat sports especially boxing because of the blunt force trauma. It causes the bruise to fill with blood.

    how do you remove it? stick a needle in and let all the blood come out or just wait and it will go away of its own

    Either wait for it to drain naturally or lance it i suppose. I remember Wayne McCullough got a terrible one on his ear when he fought Scott Harrison. I think he's one was lanced.
