Jack Johnson would beat all the ATG swarmers

    Marciano, Dempsey, Frazier, Patterson, etc.

    The reason?

Jack Johnson had one of the best right uppercuts I have ever seen. He would destroy these swarmers with that uppercut on the inside. All of them were susceptible to it. Johnson could also land in mid range if he makes them miss and nails them with a counter right hand uppercut. He also possessed the immense strength and good size not to be pushed around by these guys. He might even do a little pushing around of his own.

    Nope.

Sharkey, Hart, Burns etc are nothing like the modern fully developed swarmer. They're like little linemen fighting for leverage in comparison. They don't have the head movement, or explosiveness of the best swarmers. And they're much smaller. Dempsey, Marciano, Frazier and Tyson have much better boxing skill and physical ability than those guys, size and accomplishments aside. Look at how Johnson did against Hart in the first place?

Johnson does have a great uppercut though. Probably the best along with Foreman and Louis.

Dempsey, Marciano, Frazier and Patterson all have different styles and strengths and weaknesses.
I wouldn't class them simple as "swarmers" and lump them together.

Jack Johnson was great but I don't think he beats them all with the use of one punch. Of course we know he had a great uppercut but they were great fighters.
I've noticed the modern fighters don't have the same close-quarters sneak uppercuts that fighters used to use in the clinches. Jersey Joe Walcott made good use of it sometimes, and Primo Carnera developed a great close uppercut.

SuzieQ, you forgot Tyson ! ..... or maybe he's not an "ATG swarmer", but he was a pretty good pressure fighter.

The next best uppercut to Johnson's ,would be Holmes's imo.
I think Johnson beats those mentioned too.

What about the Lennox Lewis uppercut? We can't forget that one. It spelled doom for Grant, Tyson and countless others.

Johnson wouldn't be able to cope with the pressure of a Joe Frazier. The body punching and relentless attack wouldn't give the flat footed Johnson any punching room or time to counter. I also see Johnson losing to Marciano's Suzy-Q or Dempsey's exploding left hook. Mike Tyson? I see him throwing a right to the body and then coming up the middle with an uppercut to lay Johnson flat.

In short, none of the ATG swarmers will lose to Johnson. Johnson may have an easy time outboxing David Tua until he gets caught with a magic left hook. I think Quarry-Johnson would be a good fight, too.

    :good

Am I the only one who disagrees with the notion that Johnson's style would transition well to the modern era?

I don't know of anyone who thinks it would, with clinching rules, combination punching and the efficacy of glove blocking today.

Marciano, Frazier,Tyson and Dempsey may be too much for him a different type of swarmer than 5"7 180lb Tommy Burns, Burns was tough but did not have the power of the Swarmers mentioned above

Using the footage of the 5'7" Burns who was 168 pounds and likely ill for that match, then suggesting the same vs. Marciano, Dempsey, Frazier, Patterson, etc. to me is a real stretch,

Maybe Johnson could beat Patterson, but Marciano, Dempsey, and Frazier would absolutely destroy him as they hit much harder than Burns, and were not clueless on how to stalk and attack as Burns was in the given footage.

Didn't that pudgy, diaper-wearing, hayseed Marvin Hart actually beat Jack Johnson whilst weighing one hundred and ninety pounds?

I wouldn't pick Johnson head to head over Povetkin.

No, to be fully honest Jack Johnson's films have never impressed me all that much. What he accomplished is outstanding, but when I see the film I guess I just don't see what everybody else sees.

I don't think Jack would do very well from the mid 1930s on.

Jack might actually do pretty well today 2000-2011 considering how slow these fatties are, i don't see too many combinations overwhelming his glove blocking defense and they certainly aren't punching fast enough for his blocks to be accurate as far as the outside goes.

I think Frazier brutally hammers Johnson out of their mid rounds. The other ones might go either way under the rules or with the norms of Johnson's time, but that's all the more I give him on the h2h front there. I honestly wouldn't think to favor him over any of these guys though. Not one.
