the recent news that Chunky DeGale is knocking back modelling contracts to focus on his boxing got me thinking about another brit fighter in Gary Stretch. one of the great fight titles was when he fought eubank - was it beauty vs the beast? something like that he was the classic party boy boxer - modelling for Versace and fighting eubank at 160 when he was only junior middleweight. i remember his brother dropped a toe on the scales to bring his weight up to a respectable level after what i believe was a less than stellar camp. even eubank expressed concern to him - gary of course told him he should worry about himself eubank smashed him of course but he still had a crack anyway i was hoping you brit guys may have some thought/memories of stretch, who, and i say this in a totally hetro way, leaves degale for dead in the looks department
He was often photographed with glamorous women and female celebs in the papers and glossy mags, was Gary Stretch. I think he shot to fame when he knocked out George Collins in 30 seconds in the amateurs on Guinness Record Breakers when Collins was 67-0. He did similar against Wormald in pros. Beauty and the Best He actually had some talent - tall rangey southpaw with nice quick hands, could get up on his toes and box, could drop his hands and box, could throw corkscrew hooks/uppercuts from out of range from awkward angles, etc. I worried about him against Eubank though because he hadn't fought anyone and was said to be a natural welterweight. Chris had dominated Logan, Smith, Corti and Benn, blew away European top-six Camara without taking one punch (actually punched him from one side of the ring to the other with a single right), and knocked down Sherry (of over 100 amateur fights) for the first time in his life with a Jab in the first round, etc.
And yes Stretch was/is a good, Jesus-looking lad, who has made it in Hollywood of course. James DG is a suprising pick for casting agents, he's got quite a long dopey-looking face... - Rumour Mill - apparently John Mugabi beat the **** out of Stretch in sparring in the summer of 1993
Gary Stretch is an actor now. His best known role is the baddie in Dead Mans Shoes, in which he did a good job. What's this about DeGale being good looking anyway? Lads head looks like it should be buried on Easter Island.
Rumour has it Stretch had lead in his pants under his boxers, lead in his socks under his socks, lead in his hands, and lead in his mouth - at the weigh-in for Eubank. Also heard Eubank needed 15 stitches after the fight.
DeGale? christ my missus thinks Groves is the better looking of the two!!! and by the way a few fender benders on this thread lol!!
de gale should be sponsered by ladbrookes, or tote, or martell or summat.... i like the lad, but he is surely related to ruud van horse face.
