Victor Ortiz is Floyd's first veteran vs. young lion test

Young champions such as Floyd when he was first crowned usually face older or same aged competition, and it takes a good few years to actually grow older than the competition. Jr. was always this young and fresh dude and it might come to you as a surprise he's a full decade older than his rumored opponent, Victor Ortiz.

The big factor that is not being discussed in this latest ******* vs. ***** war is that Ortiz would be Floyd's first veteran vs. young lion test with Jr. him being the old guy at the end of his career and Vic being youngster trying to make one. Historically fighters a decade younger win the vast majority of these showdowns and Ortiz is coming in at the high point of his young career, full of energy, confidence and comfort at the weight, with the kind of newfound 'never give up' mentality Floyd himself stormed through his career with.

Biological and ring age are obviously different things, but fighting a young lion is a new kind of mental challenge for Mayweather, the pressure is on him to perform at his best, but he might be physically unable to, and the youngster knows this and pushes even harder in the gym to bring the battle tested veteran to a point where it's too much.

People not living in 2007 realize this rumored fight is a very dangerous one for Floyd. Stylistically and skills wise of course Mayweather should be the favorite, but this is a punishing sport that does not take it easy on the aging. If the fight which might just be an internet fabrication does happen in September, a 34yo Mayweather 1,5 years out of the ring will take on a 24yo young champion who just scored his career-best victory, and factors that are not visible in a boxrec record or past tapes might play a big part. With Pac-JMM almost done, much respect to Floyd for putting the World WW Championship on the line vs. the young lion, at least I hope rumors will become reality come Saturday afternoon.

BTW I did not predict anything for this fight just pointed out that it's a situation Floyd's never been in, you can either accept or deny that age is a factor, it is. HOW MUCH is the question and if it will play a significant part. Him being the much more skilled and accoplished fighter is stated in the first post. All I'm saying there's a little more into this.

 

Not many thought age would be a big factor coming into the Roy-Tarver fights. Compare the Floyd of Mosley to the Floyd of Chico or Judah and add another 1,5 years of age and inactivity. My point remains: it WILL be a factor. How significant is what we don't know, historically however 'little' would put Mayweather in the minority. We'll see I hope.
