pfff, what a joke! Let's look at a common opponent so we can see that lewis would obliterate that fat old bum. like, ray merer let's say! **** ya In 1992 a fat old holmes dominated and embarassed a prime ray mercer. SO WHAT! 4 years later, a prime lewis got outjabbed and arguably outpointed by a fat older mercer. wait...well, maybe mercer got better four years later? and maybe a fat old holmes had the key advantage of old age over a young, athletic peaking lewis... this is NOT a clear lewis decision. styles make fights sure. and maybe lewis wasn't designed for mercer but still, compare the two and even an old holmes has a real shot at outjabbing Lennox
If it was prime Holmes I would go with him. But even the best version of Holmes ate the right hand and Lennox always had the right. I think Larry would be surprisingly upsetting Lewis until Lennox started catching up and hurting Larry, stopping him in about 7. A younger Holmes could have weathered the storm and won, but I don't think this version can do it. Jmo.
Holmes' jab in his comeback was not all that special. And in the Mercer fight, Holmes did just as much mauling, rope-a-doping, and slugging as he did jabbing. I can't see Holmes outjabbing Lewis. Lewis would be a bad match for him at that stage. Holmes could fight and win against a slow, crude slugger like Mercer, but Lewis was too athletic, fast, and had too much power!
I'm a Holmes fan here, and I can't see an upset. Burno's power and size bothered Lewis. Holmes in 1992 was not a mobile fighter, he was there to hit, and did not have great defense. Lewis would catch up to him. I wish there was a poll option here of a mid round stoppage for Lewis, because that would be my pick.
I don't get it. Most people here always go on about Lewis being raw and unrefined in his pre-Steward days. I'm not a huge advocate of it as a get-out clause for Lewis, but it is TRUE to a large extent. But here you all are going along with a assumption that Lewis in 1992 beats the Holmes who easily outboxed Ray Mercer. Holmes was more or less finished in 1992, don't get me wrong, - he was over-the-hill years before that - but he was cagey enough to exploit someone with clearly novice traits. He made a fool of Mercer and even made Holyfield look silly at times in the early rounds. Lewis blasted out Ruddock in 1992, but he'd have more than his hands full with Holmes. Lewis looked downright amateurish against Tyrell Biggs, and he sucked against Levi Billups. There's a chance Lewis could win if he hurts Holmes and stays on the offensive, but Lewis wasn't much cleverer than Mercer. Holmes is just as likely to ride out any rough spots and then start picking holes in Lewis's sloppy defence. The old man Holmes would probably nick the decision. It shows how weak 1992 was that Holmes was back among the top fighters. For all the glorification of the 90s HWs that goes on, you had at least two relics from the 70s holding their own.
Holmes would beat Lewis in 92 in similar fashion to how he beat Ray Mercer. Holmes may even floor Lewis on the way to a landslide decision victory
