[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83VMQkKz0P0[/ame] Both physically and mentally, general toughness, is there anyone tougher than Ali? He probably believed he could defeat Holmes and Berbick. Throughout his career, he fought the very best at the time, some of the best of all time. He took on all the monsters.
Ali didn't know when to quit....look at him now....Marciano retired in April 1956 before his powers diminished...
I shed a few tears watching that. I still don't think Holmes took it remotely "easy" on him at all, he was mercilessly beating the helpless old shell of Ali with vicious combinations. :verysad Larry should've just used his jab to win rounds.
We can't really blame Holmes for not taking it easy. He was in a fight, after all. In a horrible way that fight was yet another demonstration of how tough Muhammad really was. Dosed up to the eyeballs on Thyrolar, had already got Parkinson's and had been two years out of the ring at 38 years of age. And yes,I agree that it was a myth that Holmes took it easy at any point in that bout.
You better believe its a myth, although at the same time i dont blame Holmes for doing his job. Yeah seen this the other day when Scully put it up on his Facebook, very emotional it is too. Lap it all up while we can cos when this guy goes there'll never be another. I cant understand the hatred he gets on this forum sometimes, i mean, theres rapists who havent recieved the hate Ali gets here
How many of the greats of boxing knew when to quit? It's an elite group for sure..I can only think of a handfull.
:good Almost like the qualities that get these guys to the top also stop them from knowing when to go.
That is the harsh reality of boxing. You have to be prepared to destroy others and to take that in kind. And yes Ali was one of the toughest fighters that ever lived.
Oh i understand that, what i cant understand is that some on here who i take it are boxing enthusiasts, cant see through that and just admire the guy for his obvious talent
Amongst the mentally toughest men i've seen box. But that's such a subjective opinion of perhaps the most difficult intangible.
Oh, I absolute admire him for his talent, his career and what he did for boxing. He was and still is a huge figure. Perhaps the only boxer you can say that was bigger than boxing. :deal And yeah, he is amongst the toughest mentally and physically. I think Jack Johnson rivals him in the mental part though. :thumbsup Nevertheless, I despise him as a person. For getting so easy manipulated, for his racism, for what he did to Frazier and his family ... :verysad
