Why are people acting as if a million would be a bad figure? Pacquiao getting a million PPVs in the States with a population of about 300 millions is regarded as a great success. The UK has about 60 million and when you think not everyone has Sky or Virgin that's massive. Haye/Ruiz got about 750k buys ffs
One in sixty. My guess is around 1.5m due to Haye being media fodder and the fact it's a heavyweight fight. Also being in Europe, the fight will get more buys than Hatton - Mayweather which was on at 3-4am in the UK. Also Wlad's girlfriend will get him some mainstream recognition from the gossip magazines as the fight approaches. Stuff like this might prompt casual fans. EDIT: For the sake of the poll I voted 1.5m. Really I think it'll be more like 1.25-1.4m
You can't really work it out in terms of 1/60 as that's not really fair - the best way to look at it is like this: There are approximately 22 million households in England and only about 7 million of those homes have Sky. For boxing PPVs people tend to get together and split the cost, so your potential market is even smaller than 7 million. I don't know what people are expecting!
I still fully expect it to beat the Hatton vs Mayweather figure, yes Hatton is a massive name in the UK but to the casual fan Mayweather was just some dwarf belt holder, the fact that most Brits thought Hatton would win should tell you that. This being a HW fight and with murdocks media machine behind it I think it's breaks that number
Seemingly many people also think Haye is the real champ. I hate the British media, they are an embarassment.
WRONG !!!! People in the UK were quickly informed that Floyd Mayweather is / was the top fighter in the world bar none when this fight was announced , to the general public Hatton was invincable , he was the little Mancunian who rolled through everybody , but they knew Mayweather may be a different story
The average man in the Street in Britain still wouldn't know who Mayweather is nor would they have seen one of his fights since.
I'll counter: WRONG!! I was in Newcastle that night watching the fight in a packed sports bar. Everyone was absolutely shocked that Hatton got KO'd. The average sports fan in the UK knew NOTHING about Floyd. The fight had higher than average figures due to media hype and patriotism - people were chanting 'There's only one Ricky Hatton' in queues for nightclubs and out of car windows. The Haye fight will have a similar effect, but it'll get higher figures due to everything I mentioned in my last post. 1.35m ish PPV. EDIT: For the record I had £300 on Floyd winning by KO in the 9th at something like 34/1. Mother****ers.
They would know who he is from the Hatton fight, which is the record PPV sales. That fight was viewed by more casual British fans than any other fight involving a foreign fighter in the last decade - therefore most sports fans would know him. That fight was a marketing dream - the 'down to earth, humble' British lad against the 'cocky, brash, trash talking' American, who was the best fighter in the World - people wanted to see Hatton shut him. That's why it sold so well. I don't see the public saying "I can't wait until that loud, brash Londoner beats up the friendly, Borat sounding Russian". I'm not saying it won't be a huge fight, but you seem to completely underestimate the role both fighter's characters (especially Floyds) help to sell that fight. The fight will be huge for many of the same reasons as Hatton v May - such as patriotism, but I honestly don't see it smashing Hatton v May.
just trying to spin it in a way so that when the fight sells 1.1 million (a ****ing good number) they can turn around and say ''SEE! haye is not a draw at all! and he demanded 50/50 haahhahaha'' people need to apply some common sense. hatton vs mayweather here was similarly hyped as de la hoya vs mayweather was in the USA. the good guy people champion who everybody loved vs the villain american. its why hatton - floyd sold and TO AN EXTENT its why oscar - floyd sold. It will do around 1.1 million i feel. which is a terrific number. sky is exceptionally good at hyping fights. not to mention haye is a good salesperson aswel.
I don't know about that, maybe to the casual Brit they now see Haye as the obnoxious, scum, ghetto type, a Tyson type if you will. Take the Haye vs Harrison fight for example. story of the fight, Harrison a man who had a dream is finally about to complete his destiny vs the ghetto Tyson type that wanted to "bend fragile Audley over a table and **** him up the ass in a vicious gang bang." Brits like that sort of character. Wlad fits the bill well being the opposite of that.
Remember that previous to Mayweather Hatton was De La Hoya Mayweather , which was also marketed very well in the UK , the very first 24/7 show on Sky Sports and more regular updates and adverts than any non UK fighter world title fight ever , thats where he begun to become known . Then came Mayweather Hatton , 24/7 programme , coverage of every press conference , coverage of there every move , in the build up to the fight they were on a live feed from Sky Sports news almost every hour , every public appearance made by Hatton it was mentioned that Mayweather was the best fighter in the world . You would have to be blind and stupid not to know that Mayweather was a top level fighter , just because you seen Ant and Dec singing " there's only 1 Ricky Hatton " doesnt mean the UK were oblivious to Mayweather :deal EDIT : you also have to remember the type of buzz there was in the UK surrounding this fight , back then Hatton was my living idol and i was 100% bought into the fact he was beating Mayweather , despite following Mayweather's career very closely as a boxing fan , i seem to remember Bert Sugar looking at Hatton in the ring moving around for the media at the MGM a day or 2 before the weigh in and telling sky sports news that the way Hatton looks and his style , he gives " Ricky Hatton the best chance of beating Floyd from all his previous opponents " ...............
