when in reality it was Shields reluctance, and extremely poor stand up. I am in no way a avid GSP fanatic, in fact i am a boxing fan, but anyone with half a brain should realise that GSP went in with the game plan of keeping the fight on their feet, like any smart fighter would against Shields. So with Shields poor stand up and reluctance to attempt take downs of course the fight was going to be routine for GSP! Sure his last several fights were not up to scratch but i would hardly blame the guy for for following his gameplan, blame Shields for not executing his "stand up" game plan if you are going to pin the lack luster of this fight on anybody.. just an opinion. cheers
He has done the same thing in every fight for years now. Is Shields a voodoo witch doctor? Tbh GSP is renowned for his wrestling, if he truly wanted to show balls he would have done his usual routine, the fact that he didn't is dissapointing.
Please do not get me wrong, criticism is definitely warranted, but everything i have read on this forum has been about GSP putting on another boring performance. I am simply questioning whether he should be to blame for it. GSP said he was gunning for the k.o, and didnt accomplish it, but to be fair he would of gone in with the mentality of k.o'ing Shields as he was coming in for the take down or at the least going for the clinch. So surely you cannot blame him for that.
He is renowned for his wrestling, like i said i am a boxing fan and it is the same with both sports, but should it not be the challengers responsibility to go "balls out" and attack the way in which he would have the greatest chance possible? Leaving the champion to try and adjust and adapt to the style proving his worth as a champion?
Jake Shields was ko'd only once in his career. Two years before GSP's 1st fight. Anyone expecting a ko is an idiot. And why wrestle when Jakes stand up is so poor? He couldnt even deal with a jab and lateral movement
Here we go again ................ an outurst from a boxing fan with absolutley no clue about anything related to mixed martial arts other than the striking game :-( OK ................. Jake Sheilds is a Caesar Gracie black belt in JJ and a 2 time all american college wrestler , he has never protested to being a stand up fighter and has been widely critisised and written off in the past because he has no stand up game . St Pierre is an extremely well rounded mixed martial artist who came from a karate background and was at the beginning of his career a stand up fighter with excellent stand up skills , he now leans more towards his wrestling ability and general MMA strategic approach to his fights . The critisism comes from the fact the gulf in class between these two men is / was supposed to be astronomical and that Sheilds could not take GSP down pointed towards GSP dominating the stand up and forcing a stoppage Instead we got GSP in a fairly competetive kick boxing fight with a grappler and never looking to fully commit to hurting Sheilds , thats why he's being crititised
Okay, i actually appreciate your elaboration unlike the last ****** who just criticised and left. My post is not so much an outburst as it is a vague wondering. Yes i may be pretty inept with my MMA knowledge but ill pose to you the same reply i did the the second reply to my post. Is it not the challengers primary objective to dismantle the champion? Not the other way round? this is not a post about pure skill or all time greatness, more a post about who is really to blame for the rather lack luster main event to a pay per view UFC..
No offence to you TS you seem like a decent poster, but discussing how boring GSP has become is getting more boring than his fights. Decide for your self who fault it was for the snooze fest Good GSP http://www.mma-core.com/videos/_Georges_St_Pierre_vs_Matt_Hughes_II_UFC_65?tid=100&vid=10002483 Boring GSP http://www.mmalinker.com/external/frames/42273/GSP_Georges_St_Pierre_vs_Jake_Shields_FIGHT_VIDEOUFC_129_HQ
My answer to your question would be this Sheilds was expected to try and take the fight to the ground and he didnt , this was evident when Gil Melendez (his cheif cornerman for this fight) told him not to pul guard " yet " , indicating that Sheilds's game plan was indeed at some point to take this fight down . He didnt ever seriously look like taking GSP down therefore GSP should of stepped his foot on the gas and utilise his far superior stand up (or is it ???) , and look to do some damage to Sheilds , not dance around and take a decision in the process lose a couple of rounds to a guy he shouldnt of really lost an exchange too ??!! , that is my take on it . Anyone defending GSP would simply say why take the risk of Sheilds getting a hold of him which again is a fair argument
well you should be able to expect a champ to preform like a champ sometimes. dont even think gsp threw a hook in this fight or an upper and if he did i missed it
That's ****in night and day...so different...thx Stoo, I almost forgot why everyone is complaining about GSP boring fight recently... ! I think he probably threw more kick in the second hughe fight then in it's last 4 fight !
No Problem Nev. The kicks are sorely missed, but how aggressive GSP was in Hughes guard made me go 'Ohh ****' I think the belt has changed Georges more than Serra, because he looked so hungry for the win in that fight
