Vic, see the Gibbons ko of Jack Bloomfield on film in 1924-5, and your question will be answered. Gibbons was in my eyes, amongst the greatest light-heavies ever. I know, "one swallow doesn't make a spring ", but this fight does to me...See it,if U can !
Yeah, I saw that in youtube Burt, unfortunately isn´t there anymore....A big right hand with Bloomfield against the ropes, as far as I remember....Am I right ? But Galindez was very good in my eyes, akward fighter but effective at the same time, he was very subtle sometimes, but also very agressive when he need to be..... Very interesting fighter....
V,too damn bad ESB posters cannot see this film of the 34 year old Gibbons, just before he retired. His combo punches were devastating, worthy of an Archie Moore. Most of us today think of Tommy Gibbons as a defensive 'boxer',but Gibbons scored many knockouts !! This film makes me appreciate lil' ole Harry Greb even more [if that's possible],cause Greb kicked the hell out of the bigger Gibbons in their last bout...Cheers...
V, Galindez was strong and awkward ,but take it from me ,the Gus Lesnevich who flattened Freddie Mills would have put a beating on Galindez. In the 1940s,Galindez would have been a good trial horse... What a set of LH's there were contending. Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore, Harold Johnson,Gus Lesnevich, Fitzie Fitzpatrick, Pat Valentino, Freddie Mills, Lloyd Marshall, Charley Burley etc. Tough babies all.....And Billy Conn and Melio Bettina, I might add...:good
I don't even think it's close ... Gibbons was better in every way .. however, it's nice to see Victor mentioned here .
Yes he indeed was an interesting fighter...and one of my favorites...and it's interesting that in both times he was beaten for the title, he was never outboxed for the title..but the annals of the lightheavy division, there were a LOT of consumate boxer types...in fact classic boxers with a paucity of punching power, ...specialist in clever boxing and defense, and Tommy Gibbons ranks among these, and yes he was indeed capable of turning the trick and outboxing Victor...not laying a hurtful glove on him, but capable of taking the crown via points.
Yes, in spite of voting for Gibbons here, I'm a huge fan of Galindez..I think he was one of the best lightheavies..not only of his era (I see him barely getting by Conteh), but in any other era. A fine, quality champion...an excellent 15 round fighter as well.:good
RC, See the Gibbons/Bloomfield ko and you will agree that Tommy Gibbons even at 34 years of age could BANG.Gibbons ko'd many of his opponents. If I had the Gibbons/ Jack Bloomfield bout on film ,I would show it on ESB again as a "public" service. But alas, I don't own this film. SHAME ! I believe this film would be a bridge between the "oldtimers",and the "modern" age...
i'll a little too high and a little too ignorant about both fighters (gibbons) especially to provide a solid analysis but i'm enjoying reading it anyway
