Not really. When Arum made it clear that this would affect their relationship for ALL of his fighters (including Manny), HBO should have sucked it up. Whatever losses (if any) they'd incur on Cotto-Mayorga, they'd more than make up for with exclusive dibs on Pacquiao fights. Also - even though it was perceived as a mismatch, Mayorga at least brought a name and a ton of personality to the table. If HBO is still serious about being "where boxing lives", this is a no brainer.

 

By the way, I fully expect this to go into Floyd's excuse rolodex for not fighting Manny. Honestly, don't even care about that fight anymore.

 

Mayorga wasn't the opponent they wanted for the HBO date; it was Vanes. HBO was happy to carry a Cotto fight if it was against Berto or Martinez, but Arum wanted to be able to keep things in house. Also, the "this will affect ALL of our fighters" hellfire and brimstone only came out after HBO decided to keep the date for Martinez and he had to take his ball and go to Showtime. Nonito Smoak is entirey correct that HBO catches **** for carrying uncompetitive mismatches, but when they try to force guys to take on challenging fights, promoters and fans of those fighters whine even more.

 

pac has been fighting under HBO. lets see how high the PPV buys under SHO.

Like you say, it's damned if you do, damned if you don't for HBO. They are definitely held to a higher standard. With a figther like Pacquiao at stake, however, they should have bitten the bullet...Either way, the point will be moot when Mosley stops Pacquiao tomorrow.

 

A couple of sloppy past it guys winging shots at each other? You and I clearly look for something different when judging the quality of a fight. Mayorga is barely at a professional level at this point given his part time status and lack of accomplishments in the last 5 years. HBO did well passing on that piece of **** match up.

 

In an of itself, I agree with you 100%.

In the context of "Do the Cotto fight or lose Manny", they need to suck it up and put Cotto on TV.

 

So HBO is obligated to put up with Arum's childish and psychotic behavior because he has one fighter HBO can't live without? Considering that all promoters in boxing are greedy and self serving, running a business that way could prove very expensive in the long run.

Who cares about HBO. If they keep on with there new direction from being a television broadcaster to a boxing promoter/CO promoter with GB then they allrdy digged there own grave.

What HBO has done to the state of boxing the last years is an absolutly discrace.

 

HBO makes mistakes. Getting RJ Jr, back commentating and pushing Martinez are steps in the right direction in my opinion. I'm glad Showtime is around but sometimes I don't know who shobox fighters are and could care less to watch the fights. If I'm nor interested its a problem as I'm about as hardcore as they get and will watch almost anything.

 

It's a shame you don't because Showtime is far and away the better station for boxing. HBO matchmaking is garbage.

All HBO has to do is REALLY get rid of Greenburg. Entertainment doesn't require the contestants be the very best in the world. Just capable enough to be entertaining. This was the winning formula in the HBO after dark series of the 90s. They need to return to it.

 

That's pretty much the whole point of ShoBox. Most people aren't like me that pretty much know who the fighters are, but ShoBox is an introduction of young fighters. They are young prospects with not many pro fights and they get introduced via ShoBox. You really shouldn't know much or if anything about fighters on ShoBox, all it is an introduction.

 

Yes, let's all be yes men and pretend that the state of boxing is going better than ever. Let's just pretend that everything HBO is doing is just wonderful.
