A dancing master/pure boxer Pastrano was vs the counter punching, resourceful Argentine bull Victor Galindez..15 rounds in their primes.
I can see Galindez counter-punching him, but I would say Pastrano had the clear edge in footwork.......very very close fight but Galindez would land the heavier punches, I think, and win the majority of the rounds on the way to a close decision........
Vic, I could see these guys splitting a few fights..Willie at his best (vs Johnson) would simply be too fast and slick for Victor, but any other version gets outgutted down the stretch, as you say, IMO...love both of these guys..they woulod both be way too much for anybody around today. Pastrano would have been pure poison for Hopkins, IMO.
Hmm, I've never been as high on Pastrano as the rest of the board. I realize Dundee praises him as a predecessor to Ali and Leonard but he so many fights that a guy of his stature to win and his most notable wins over an aged Johnson was controversial and wins over Maxim and London and splitting a series with Gregorio Peralta do not an all time great make. I'm not denying that Pastrano was a talented fighter and I'm not saying he couldn't beat Galindez once or twice out of a couple fight series. I'm just saying he gets too much praise as "a boxing wizard". Sorry to get on a rant here but I had to put it out there.
Watch his fight vs Harold Johnson..he also was very impressive against Rex Layne and John Holman, among others.
