Kelly Pavlik is done.

Yeah. Too early to write him off just yet.

 

I believe He did Carry his power at least With Lopez, Its just Lopez is tougher than what people thought he was, and he had a Awesome chin!

with kirklands last setback, we need some more lone star representers in the boxing world

 

I have a couple questions for you guys who claim Kelly doesn't have good power at the higher weight.

How good is Lopez's chin?

What opponent did you see hurt Lopez?

Who knocked Lopez down?

When, and against whom, did Lopez get knocked out?

Simple questions really. I await your answers.

 

We can't say for certain that Pavlik lacks power at the higher weight, but to this point there's not much to suggest he does have power there.

The onus is on you to point out evidence of his having power there. Knocking people out at 160 isn't the same thing as doing it at 168, nor should anyone assume that a fighter's power will be identical as he moves up.

He landed enough quality shots to knock Lopez out, and against Hopkins he had no affect at all. Granted, he didn't land much in that fight, but his punches looked slow and weak. I think this is a speed issue more than anything, and hopefully as he commits to that division his speed — and thus power — will improve.

I just hope someone talks sense into him about stepping up to world level in his next bout. It's a process and he needs to approach it as such.

 

I think the proposed schedules of the top guys at 168 will take care of Kelly if Leow and Dunkin don't put him in check. He needs one more "tune-up." Hopefully Pryor jr. He's got the right style to force Pav to work on a lot of the issues he should focus on.

 

I agree boo. Its not like Pryor Jr. Is some chump either so nobody can say "pavlik is fighting another hand picked bum" It would be entertaining !

 

I fear that would be a negative fight. Kelly needs a good old fashioned scrap to rebuild momentum. He was not only a champion but a very popular champion, and to get back to that level ($$$) he needs to be in against someone who will fight and take risks.

I don't get your "guttless" Dirrell argument, Dirrell beat the **** out of AA and in my opinion beat Froch as well, those are two tough guys to look good against, especially at his age. He "ran" from Froch I guess I can concede that, but he still landed the cleaner more impactful shots. He dominated AA not as completely as Froch, but he beat him up worse than Froch did. I believe he would absolutely destroy Pavlik, Dirrell has legit speed, good power, and is a skilled athletic fighter who's been in with some tough cats. Ward would also beat Pavlik, based on him being more skilled, more versitile, and the hand speed difference is simply too much for him to overcome.

I give him a chance against AA, based on AA style specifically standing in front of him in high guard (I believe Pavlik could punch through his guard)and AA being the smaller man. I would give him a better chance against Bute based on Bute being relatively untested and seeing how he performed in the first Andrade fight, I think he can be stopped he just hasn't been up against the caliber of guys to do it...yet.

 

I agree with this, I think the jury is still out on Pavlik's power at 168, I don't think he really "got Lopez" to the degree that he's capable. I think his range was a bit off, and I think his timing was a bit off, and for a guy like Kelly who's so long he needs space to maximize his shots, and I felt his timing pre Taylor and against Taylor was really good and helped him alot. Coming off the layoff I didn't feel he was getting into the right spots in relation to his opponent to maximize his power, and Lopez' style was ackward and hurt his timing. I think as Pavlik gets back in the gym and gets some rounds under his belt he'll get his range right, timing will get better and as a result his power will improve as well.

 

Also I agree with a couple others, I thought Lopez looked pretty decent, and I'm not sure that he's not a little better than what some are giving him credit for. There were times where the kid looked damn good in there.

Pavlik aint DONE. He might not ever become a BHOP style dominant unified champion, but he aint done neither.

He could contend for another 3-4 maybe. He still beats 90% of his weight class, and that's a pretty significant stat.
