Don't forget him trying to start a brawl with Sanders after Sanders defeated his brother :-(

Lewis was offered 18 million for the re-match. He balked. Deep down, he knew he would not be as lucky in the return match. To insult the fans even more, he was negotiating matches with Kirk Johnson and entertaining a Tyson re-match before the WBC ordered him to either re-match Vitali or be stripped of his belt. So Lewis promptly decided to retire.

Many forget Vitali took the first match on less that 2 weeks notice. Despite this he was up 4-2 all all three cards.

Yep your right, he DID take the fight at 2 weeks notice. What you fail to say though, is that he was already in training for another fight. Its not as if he only trained for 2 weeks, that is a misleading statement you made. If Vitali only had 2 weeks notice to fight Lewis then the same can be said that Lewis only had 2 weeks notice to fight Vitali:good

As for the scorecard, i had the same score but that doesnt mean squat. Its a 12 round fight

The last great heavyweight fight, and thats a shame :-(

Im a big Lennox fan and dont like the Klits, but Vitali was going to win that fight. He was unstoppable that night, eating that moster uppercut as if it was nothing, he was not going to be stopped. Lewis on the other hand flopped down on his stool in utter exhaustion, and that my friends is what would have cause the stoppage soon after if not for the cut

Lewis turning down them mega-millions' for a rematch indicate that one, he had enough money already to do so, and two, he wasn'y gonna risk his health at age 38 in a proposed Dec. 2003 rematch, either....

Did not Lewis tell the whole boxing world he would give Vital a rematch yet dragged out his title reign for another 10 months unto only 3 days before he was to be stripped of his last remaining belt he announced his retirement. sorry but in my opinion Lewis left the sport in shame due to his antics and abrogated his responsibilities to the boxing fans.

The impression I always got was that despite that Lewis probably looked more tired by the 6th round Vitali had lost the pop on his punches whereas lennox was still landing big bombs but really who knows how it woulda gone on, it should just be appreciated for what it is which is a ****ing great fight in which both fighters showed a lot of heart.

I dont blame Lewis for not doing the rematch, he was old and megarich, he probably didnt even want to have that one last tough fight he did have by fighting vitali nevermind fighting him again knowing it would be another tough one

Lewis was forced to go back into Ray Mercer mode. He probably would have always struggled a little against Vitali because of the awkward style and jab of Vitali, in fact I would say he might even lose to Vitali if it was against the early 90's version of Lewis, but Lewis gained that one intangible neither of the Klitschkos has ever shown and thats the ability to throw boxing out the window and slug out a win. Thats what makes an elite heavyweight, and Vitali is not one of them. Entertaining fight though. :hey

IMO I think Vitali is much more the master at long range then Lewis ever was.... Lewis was not a good boxer under Pepe Correa. Manny Steward came in and got Lewis to use his attributes.....

I still contend Klitschko was physically fine against Lewis aside from the cuts.... He knew where he was at and was in control.... Lewis never looked so sloppy and uncoordinated in all his title fights...

Granted Lewis left himself open for McCall's quick counters and Lewis was sluggish for Rahman in Africa...

You didnt see a clear slowdown in Vitali? In the last couple rounds, I saw a discouraged fighter who could no longer keep Lewis off him. Lewis was still coming hard and strong and broke his will in my opinion. Those klits just arent programmed like that. As much as Vitali petioned after the fight, I think he was glad it was over. I know he tried like hell to get a rematch, but Lewis didnt want to go through that kind of fight again. He wanted to beat up on a washed up Tyson for easy money.

Yes. I saw the slow down.. I saw both men gasping and winded... BUT! Like Gil Clancy use to say, a man in-shape will get his second wind, where as a man outta shape will not... Klit was in fine shape, and Lewis was in okay / decent shape at 256 and age 38, so he too prolly would've gotten another wind surge had the fight carried on into rds 8 thru 12, if need be...
    :good
Fact is, both big men spent a lotta' energy fighting for them 6 rds...:deal:hey
