Five feet ,6 and a half inches tall, best weight 175/180/lbs [approx], terrific two handed puncher, how does he do against your top ten heavyweight Champs?

quite honestly he beats none... great fighter that Sam was i don't see him beating many Top 15 fighters at Heavyweight. yet a strong case can be made for him at 147-175 against almost anyone

He would have a shot at beating anyone at heavyweight.

    Thats how good he was.

He has a very good chance versus anyone from his own own era or just after. I think his style translates better than all his peers.

Who would make him favourite to hunt down Corbett?

I'd think Corbett would be one of those guys he never succeeds hunting down.

Now a Frazier, a Foreman, a Liston, Dempsey, and a Marciano.... He's got a big chance.

    Maybe.

I think Jackson wasn't the puncher that Langford was and I think Sullivan, but I think even a faded Sullivan is directly comparable.

edit: i think he'd have a decent chance. if sam doesn't have to cut the ring and run after a guy, he can do wonderful things. believe.

He could arguably beat 3-5 of my top ten.

I think he would probably have got Corbett sooner than Fitzsimmons or Jeffries.

I do like his footwork, i love his footwork. But I wouldn't guess that Langford ever beat a big man anything like as clever or mobile as primed-Corbett. Distance might be key here. Over 12 rounds, you favour Sam?

Having said that, Langford would likely have beaten the older version the men you mention beat.

None on my list....... Jan, I cannot place "Corby or Fitz" on my ATG top-10 list of ex-heavyweight greats from 1887 to 2011.... Top-20 is more like it...

I took the question to imply a fight where the career stakes are high for both men, that would likley be 20-45 rounds.

Corbett was clever and elusive, but he was troubled by pressure fighters and a good finisher could close the deal on him. I see Langford as offering some aspects of both.
