I've heard people compare Tyson to Marciano before. Why is that? I don't see it. In my opinion, Tyson fought more like Dempsey. Jake compares Tyson to Rocky around 1:56 in the clip. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joPL1ZOMKtc[/ame]
Marciano and Tyson were both 5'10 guys, with short reaches and devastating power in both hands. They came forward in aggressive styles looking for the KO at all times. I think Tyson used some moves that resembled Dempsey's bob-and-weave, and through fast hooks spring out of his crouch like Dempsey did. So at times they do resemble each other - and Tyson almost certainly copied some from Dempsey. But Dempsey was a completely different build and his style, for all his famed ferocity, was not always the same come-forward "swarmer" style that he's often lumped with. Dempsey had long arms, and skinny legs, stayed up on his toes a lot, danced in and mauled guys in the clinches, and can even be seen half-turning away and retreating his position at times. In some ways he looks more like prime Holyfield than prime Tyson.
If anybody Tyson was comparable to Smokin' Joe Frazier. swarming style, crouch move foreward quick punches. But Joe could take much more punishment!
I disagree man, Tyson isn't really an out and out swarmer to me, Frazier is always on your chest, he is the ultimate swarmer at hw, whereas Tyson didn't mind standing off you and exploding on you with a combo after making you miss with your jab, he's more Floyd Patterson than anyone else imo, and more Dempsey than Frazier for me.
I think Tyson was a bigger, more powerful, stronger Floyd Patterson. Not Dempsey. Dempsey was a tall rangy fleet footed fighter, more like a holyfield.
LaMotta is a little sociopathic wiseguy. Clearly not intimidated by Tyson in the slightest. Not that Tyson was trying to intimidate, but alot of fighters around him in these type of interviews tend to butter him a little bit
