Is Geale Tasmania's Greatest

WAS Daniel Geale's IBF world title victory yesterday the greatest ever individual sporting achievement by a Tasmanian?

The 30-year-old Sydney-based fighter won a split-points decision over Germany's Sebastian Sylvester to claim the IBF world middleweight title early yesterday morning.

It's a feat Anthony Mundine and Danny Green failed to do - win a world title in Germany by defeating a local.

The IBF belt is one of the most sought after in international boxing, originally worn by "Marvellous" Marvin Hagler and has also been won by Roy Jones Jnr, Bernard Hopkins and Arthur Abraham.

Geale's victory sees him join Jeff Harding, Lionel Rose and Jimmy Carruthers - three legends of Australian boxing - as the only Australian-born fighters to win world titles overseas.

Three-time world boxing champion Jeff Fenech said Geale's win was a great fillip for Australian boxing.

"It is a real boost," Fenech said.

"No disrespect to Anthony Mundine but these guys who are fighting for these alphabet bull**** titles, anybody who knows anything about boxing knows Anthony Mundine has not won a title. He's won interim titles.

"Daniel Geale is called the 'the Real Deal' for a reason and he went overseas and won it.

"There have been some great [middleweight] champions and hopefully Daniel will be one of them."

But how does this compare with other Tasmanian sporting performances?

Five Tasmanians have claimed Olympic gold medals - Michael Grenda (team pursuit cycling), Maree Fish (hockey), Stephen Hawkins (double sculls), Matthew Wells (hockey) and Scott Brennan (double sculls) - but none as individuals.

Tasmanian Institute of Sport director Paul Austen said Geale's performance deserved to be ranked up with any by a local.

"It is a very good question," Austen said.

"I would strongly dispute it is the best sporting performance by a Tasmanian but it would comfortably finish in the best 10 individual performances by a Tasmanian athlete, perhaps even in the best five.

"To decide what is the greatest, you have to look at how many people compete in it, what are the opportunities for people to compete in it and then you get into some of the things with boxing because it is a little bit of a confused sport in which belt is the best and which federation is the best.

"But there is no doubt it is one of the greater sporting performances by a Tasmanian in international sport."

Off the top of his head, Austen nominated Brennan and Hawkins' Olympic gold medals, cyclist Danny Clark's individual silver medal, triathlete Craig Walton's US performances and Nick Rogers' sailing world championships as worthy recipients of the state's best performance.

And of course there is Ricky Ponting, Australia's former cricket captain and the nation's all-time leading Test and one-day run scorer.

But while cricket is arguably the biggest sport in Australia, it is only played by a handful of Commonwealth countries compared to boxing that is a truly international sport.

Promoter Gary Shaw says he is still thrilled by the performance of his new IBF Middleweight Champion, Daniel Geale (26-1, 15 KOs), who dethroned champion Sebastian Sylvester by 12-round split decision on Saturday night at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Germany.



"I felt like I was dreaming," recounted Shaw. "To win a decision in Germany is making a statement. Daniel was terrific, very fast, and he stayed busy throughout and maintained a great output of punches."

The Tasmanian-born boxer is the first Australian to win a belt on German soil. He won by scores of 118-110 and 118-112 on two cards, while another judge curiously had Sylvester winning 118-110 on the third card.

"I will speak with the team about several different opponents, and we will carefully weigh Daniel's options. Right now we're just celebrating his brilliant victory."

 

Good to see Daniel Geale on the Footy Show finally getting some much deserved exposure in Australia........ the Real Deal.

 

Gary Shaw is an ******* but he will be good for Daniel. Always negotiates good fights and deals for his guys. He doesn't put bull**** cards on like top rank

 

The question of 'is Geale Tassie's greatest ever sportsman' is a fair and reasonable one bearing in mind what he's just been able to achieve.

Will be interesting to see when he's finished his career how he rates - by then he may be a run away 1st place.

 

Geale should offer Pavlik a crack at the belt in the USA.

 

Couple of problems with that. Don't think Pavlik can make 160lbs anymore and even though he has a world title i don't think HBO or Showtime would accept Geale as an opponent, just yet. Manfredo wouldn't be a bad first defence in Australia, he would travel, and it would be talked about a bit in the States. Geale can make more money fighting Mundine in his first defence i agree but it does absolutely zilch to raise his profile internationally because nobody outside of Australia takes Mundine seriously.

 

I agree with this mate...Mundine has zero fans overseas....but my whole point is about Geale fighting Mundine again is to get the "aussie fans on his side" with the huge amount of publicity this fight and a Geale win would bring :deal

If Geale can beat Mundine here his PPV profile will have been raised enough for his promoters to bank on him being an Aussie PPV star

 

I think if he fights Kelly he should do it now Francis because IF Pavlik gets back to anywhere near the class of fighter he was v JT sadly Gealzaghe gets beaten (Badly) sorry Sox and all that but as great a win the Sylvester win was Gealzaghe ain't near the level Pavlik was two to three years back fella .

 

Ash ever thought Geale and his crew don't want to go down the Choc route ? anyway if he does step up and fight and lose overseas defending his title he could always fall back on fighting only in Aus like Choc did and still earn huge dough , who knows he could earn grater bucks than Choc after all he would be going back down under as a defeated legit title holder instead of a bloke who got KTFO trying to win a genuine one .

 

That would be a good fight, Geale would slap Pavlik senseless. :good

 

Not a chance, robot Pavlik has never been better than Geale is today.
Geale would dance around him and bash him into next year. :deal
