So after getting his career set quite awhiles ago and watching it in dribs and drabs have been re-watching it the last few days.

So it will not be of news to any regulars here in the Classic but by god, did this guy have some moves. The highest praise I could give him is that you could show nearly any of his fights to someone who's never been in the ring and they could appreciate the artistry on what was on display. Sublimely beautiful.

I could go on for hours more but it would be embarassing.

Before vision was readily available of him I used to read about 'Sweet Pea' in KO & Ring in the but would never see his fights in far off Australia, but years later I'm not even sure what I'm seeing does justice to the fight reports I read years ago. At his prime a chance against any of the all time greats.

So yeah, tldr, watching some old Whitaker fights, got very, very appreciative...

He was something special. I have him as a lock on the top three all time lightweights.
He was a true master of defense and a real showman.

What i would give to have been a bit older than i was back in the 90s.

Thats the thing, before footage would read so much about him and couldn't believe that anyone could be so good. Thought it was the usual hype & bs.

After watching him I think he got undersold! Shuts a stadium full of rampant Mexicans vs Chavez, draws applause from a rabid hometown audience vs Ramirez I, playing McGirts head like a tom-tom in bout II, pretty much shuts out all challengers along the way, his only opponent his own ego...

Theres so many things you pick up watching him it's a masterclass. If I had to pick a style I'd like to have, as much as any bombers would be fun, Whitaker at his peak would be the only choice.

It's good to finally see him getting some respect after all these years. You rarely even hear his name mentioned these days!

I really disliked him during his career because he could be such a truculent ass, but I have always thought he was blessed with amazing talent and grit. Top 3 lightweight of all time and well up there in LB 4 LB.

Ain't nothing embarrassing about praising this man to the heavens my friend.

The way I usually put it is that when you watch him it's as if he's (and I really think this) just looking at his opponents as if to say 'what are you doing in my ring?'

I'm all talked out on Whitaker. As a matter of fact, I'm talked out on most topics these days. I've lost the fire, I'm afraid. Peaked early. A has-been, etc. etc.

It's funny because I now know about 10X as much as I used to, but I'd probably still get owned by my younger self in a debate.

Maybe I'll dig up some old posts.

well I'm giving you the Teddy Atlas talk now,

You've been asked to make a post right? So you're going to turn this down and go home? And wake up tomorrow, and bump this thread when nobody else gives a ****? People can see the time that posts are made, people will notice that I asked you to make the post today, and that you came up with some old dusted off **** a couple of days later, and people are going to laugh, people are going to attack you a lot, and expose your weaknesses. But if you pull those now grown fingers out of your candy ******* right now and make the post, then you're going to make a ****ing statement, not just about Pernell Whitaker, but about yourself and show these ****ers that you're no joke. So make the ****ing post.

    Part I:

Must of us know Pete's style front to back. Yes, I'm calling him Pete because that was his actual nickname, and goddamnit, I've earned the right to call him that. What I'm gonna talk about is something else. It's called "bottom".

It's a term I've heard our resident old-timer burt bienstock use here and there. What it describes is essentially a fighter's (or any person, for that matter) will. Not just the will of any old fighter, but the will of those select few who simply didn't know how to count themselves out. Those who had that undying belief in themselves no matter what the odds or circumstances. Those who went through hell and back and had you thinking "Just another day at the office for him."

Normally this isn't the kind of topic Pete would be associated with, and for good reason through most of his career: he was just too good. However, what I've decided to do is to highlight a few of his fights, or even select moments, which show that the man, despite his godly skills, was one of the mentally toughest sons of bitches that ever stepped in the ring.

All new material. I'm going to try to put into words, in detail, my full thoughts on the man's character. Give me some time, though. I got **** I gotta do. Figured I'd just start it off with a little forward.
