I've been deeply, 'in love' with Whitaker for a long time. One the finest and most complete boxers ever, regardless of his lack of power. He had a bit the Ali 'granite' in his chin when he was a shell and a spent force in his mid-30's, and well past his prime. He was a tough little *****, inside. But it was his long range -side to side- backfoot boxing where he shone most. I think the fight which defines his style and the overall broad scope of his effectiveness was, Azumah Nelson. He did a little bit of everything that night, really well.

I think it's unfortunate that he didn't face a fighter capable of making him red-line his game when he was actually at his peak (89-92).

As good as his performances were during that time, he was basically in second gear during that period and only met stern challenges when he was outside of his sharpest shape years later (McGirt, Chavez, DLH).

It's unfortunate he didn't face a better crop of fighters during that time, because he could have shown us even MORE than what we saw.

Maybe not his best performance, but the first time I watched Whitaker live was his thorough beatdown of Poli Diaz. Now this main event followed the Michael Moorer-Alex Stewart brawl which was a hard act to follow. I've read about Pea in numerous magazines and wasn't sure if I would like his defensive mastery. I love offensive powerhouses, but what Pea did that night, losing the first few rounds and then, poof, Diaz slowly succumbs to his worst nightmare.

I became a fan right then and there.

He's underrated. Whitaker is one of the most skilled and acomplished boxers in the history of the sport. If you think I rate him too high. Let me ask you this. Who beats him at lightweight? Benny Leonard and that's it. Ike Williams and Shane Mosley would give him the most probblems, due to their size. Than again they'd give anyone problems at light weight due to their size. Who beats him at welter weight? Ray Leonard, Ray Robinson and Thomas Hearns. Not because Whitaker can't match them in terms of in the ring skills but once due to their size. I might not pick Whitaker in every match up, but he has the skills and savvy to beat anyone from 135-154.

the wild clubbing left hands against hurtado, and the shots he took against trinidad, are what elevates him to true greatness for me.

    Yeah right

Whitaker is 1 of my all time favourite fighters, easily.... but outside of Duran & Pacquiao there is no more hero worshipped fighter on ESB.
