Both fights would have lasted quite a bit longer, imo. The first fight featuring Cooper's knockdown of the young Cassius Clay may well have gone the distance. Cassius would have been on his toes,in more than one sense, and he would've been more cautious about the Cooper left hook. In the World championship return bout,Muhammad would have stopped Henry in the latter rounds. Discuss.
Apart from the cuts, I didn't think Ali showed any drastic edge over Cooper in either fight. Cooper had a style that didn't get overwhelmed by Ali's. He landed his jab and his hook enough to be competitive and he managed to fight a bit when Ali clinched him. I assume a "tough skinned" Cooper would have been competitive, but Ali would go up a few gears and carry it to a clear decision win but not a serious thrashing.
the first fight would have gone very much like this imo and i agree. ali was green a touch and as cooper noted he didn't know how to fight on the inside. a tough grinding, but not terribly close decision. the second fight though, cuts or not, ali wins. by the 10th i see the referee stopping it after a thorough beatdown
Ali was pasting Henry all over the ring in the first fight when it got stopped because of cuts, he would have got knocked out eventually cuts or no cuts. Ali played with him all through the fight, the knockdown got him focussed. The next round he beat him up bad.
He got cut because Ali kicked it up a gear and started laying into him. He got stomped in the final rounds of both fights, with a fight stopping cut happening along the way. Not at all out there to think Ali stops him both go-rounds by the 10th.
Interesting thought. Cooper had a go at Ali no doubt, its not often you see Ali complaining to the ref like he did in the opening round. I can see this going the distance and a green Clay taking a reasonably comfortable decision. As for the 2nd fight, Ali was a different beast, bigger, sharper, more mature fighter. Either way i look at it, cuts or no cuts, Henry is getting stopped or KO'd sooner or later
