I think Jack Johnson had a lot more than 3.
    More like 8.

Some historians have argued that John L Sullivan had more than 30!

Typical anti modernist chauvinism. Tyson had to chase down multiple belt holders due to no fault of hisown. In reality he had 9 defenses.

George Foreman 3 defenses... including the greats Jose Roman and Axel Shulz.

There was no title at stake against Briggs... not even the WBU trinket you have included in your total. Foreman was a dog of a champion.

Louis has 25, I can't be bothered to list them all.

    Johnson has 8 :-

    Philadelphia Jack O'Brien.
    Tony Ross
    Al Kauffman
    Stanley Ketchel
    James J Jeffries
    Fireman Flynn
    Battling Johnson

Well, it cuts both ways, Seamus.
With more titles floating around you don't have to wait as long for a shot to become a champion.
He benefitted from the proliferation of titles. He got his shot really quick, and without having to eliminate genuine top 5 contenders.
I seem to remember he wasn't even number 1 contender in the WBC when he got his shot at Berbick. And Ring magazine had him about 7.

    So, he benefitted if anything.

Yup. Good points. Tyson, in particular, proved rather retro-activey that he deserved the title shot by erasing the division.

Still, I believe he had 6 successful defenses for the undisputed title.
